Most RHCP songs make me want to play drums, though. Great drumbeats.
On the other hand, I've always wanted to be able to play the solo to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. :|

I chose the guitar for a few reasons. The best being you can take it anywhere, and also if you visiting somewhere, someone usually has one lying around. Plus you can play any tune you want to impress friends, girls, or if you become totally broke.... you can rely on it to panhandle! :P
I've been playing the guitar on and off for the past 24 years and it's a great feeling to pull one out and jam for someone.
But I would definately say if the $$ is available, pick up a cheap drumset for your house as well. Much fun to be had pounding on it!

You have, AGAIN made me log in to post on a forum I never go on anymore!
Both the Drums and the Guitar have so many pros and cons, as you stated, but what about the Bass, the Keyboard, why not ALL of them.
What I'm trying to say is, why limit yourself to one instrument when you can have them all, Electronic music is the way to go my friend! Techno is the future! Let me list you some "Pros and Cons" of Electronica.
Pros:
Heavy Duty at home ( I know what kind of machine you're sporting,:P) and available on the go, your laptop should have no trouble running the basic programs you need.
Syncopation is cool. B]
Its not that hard to understand, you can teach yourself!
A wide audience here on the internet.
You NEVER have to sing.
Throw CRAZY RAVE PARTIES, impress your friends!
Cons:
You don't actually play anything.
Arguably, its not actually music.
You don't actually play an instrument.
