Discovery Homework Help Kiosk! - Monk - 01-13-2008

Just would like to pitch in what I can...I have a degree in Physics, a minor in Mathematics and I did a lot of work in Nuclear Science. So if you have any questions along those lines don't hesitate to post.

In physics, I can help in the areas of Newtonian Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Modern Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Physics of Electronic Devices (a bit rusty on that one) and a spattering of Astrophysics. In math, I can help with most Calculus, Differential Equations and Matrix Theory. I can also provide introductory informaion in Thermal Engineering and Nuclear Science. Hope I can help someone!

P.S.: Though I doubt anyone would need the help but I have a good beginner's knowledge of the Quantum Criticallity of solids (which involves many topics).

Hi SwissScorch,

FYI, I'm a Senior, and I just went through everything you are going through now.

Yes, the system is messed up.
Yes, the test is completely flawed.
and finally, Yes, you are better than this test.

I always liked to put myself above the system. To me, it was an act of rebellion against something that was corrupt, and simply--stupid.

The first time I took the SATs, I did horribly. I thought of it as something that would determine my career and my future, and I did not want to take it. I wanted finish it ASAP and get back to disco FL. This was last March. At the time, I thought, "this test is stupid. I know a lot of people who didn't do well and still ended up great in life.

The thing is, Swiss, it's not just the system, its the age we live in. My godmother barely got a 1300 on her SATs around 20 years ago and got into Harvard. Today, this cannot possibly happen, simply because there are more college applicants. The "system," ETS(Evil Testing Satans), simply had to make things harder in order to make the test accurate.

Test prep courses from TPR and Kaplan are the ones who capitalized on this issue, charging thousands of dollars for SAT course. Trust me, TPR and Kaplan will disappear once this baby boom passes over.

Swiss, I would handle it this way.

In a way, the American public education system does suck.

I do not know if your parents want you to get into some ivy or top rated school, but whatever it is, realize that complaining will not help.

After flunking my first round of SATs, I complained, reassured myself that I was "above the system," but realized that it would do nothing.

I decided that I would bother with the test. I went back, shook hands with my archenemy, and took on the SAT like a challenge. I didn't think about what would happen during it at all. It was just me and the 3hr test, like some guy sitting on the train doing SuDoKu.

My advice to you as someone from the same generation would be to take the test. Forget about "system," forget about what could happen---just focus on the test itself. Remember that your parents care about you and want the best for you. Also remember that the test is something for the colleges to learn more about you. Sure the test isn't accurate, but without the test, what else can there be?

Most importantly, the test is not the end-all-be-all. SAT scores are secondary to school grades and counselor and teacher recs.

Take the test, do your best, and you will be fine.

I hope this helps, mate.

Yours,
elgato.

yeah, thanks alot.

Today we got another SAT prep course flyer and my dad asked me if I wanted to go, he said "It's your future, not mine". But then I said "It's your money, not mine":D. If he says he doesn't care about the money, then I'll go.

Anyways, thanks alot. Once mid-terms are over I'm going to brain first into hell... or that SAT study guide.

And yes, I didn't do too hot on that practice SAT, mainly because I answered mostly all the questions, I didn't know you get points off for getting them wrong at the time, hehe.

That's why they give you a practice;)

Hi Monk, its great to have you onboard. Awesome avatar, btw.

If you don't mind me asking, Swiss, are you looking at any specific colleges?

And which prep course are you going to take?

Discovery Homework Help Kiosk! - Heartless - 01-14-2008

colleges/universities I don't know yet.

I have a book on foreign colleges that are in English, and I really want to go to Australia. It seems promising to me. Good schools, not too expensive, and if they require SAT's, the scores aren't too high. Being Swiss, I guess... well does nationality effect this? I have a friend that tells me that she envies me because it'll be easy for me to get into a good school because of my ethnicity. (I'm also half Spanish btw, yes, Spanish.)

And prep course, if I do take, it will probably be from Kaplan I believe, they sent me a flier saying that they will have classes in my school.

Discovery Homework Help Kiosk! - pchwang - 01-14-2008

Sounds good Swiss. Aussie's an awesome place. Too bad we don't have onca around anymore...he could tell you about it. Nationality matters a little bit. I dunno about the situation in Australia, but in the USA, you have an advantage if you are Hispanic not necessarily Spanish. This is because Hispanics are largely underepresented in US private colleges. Need to research more on Australian schools before I give you a definite answer on that one.

Anyhow, good luck with everything. Remember that no matter how well you learn the techniques Kaplan teaches you, it's all worthless without practice. Practice makes perfect.

If you really want to do well on the test, I would do at least 8-10 tests before you take the exam. Also remember that you should not take the SATs more than three times, but the colleges typically take the best scores from all the tests and combine them.

I don't know about SAT Subject Tests and Australian schools, but they might require those as well.

Good luck and godspeed!

Subject: German/Forgein Languages

Hi all, I'm in the US and my major requires me to take a forgein language. Since I took two years of German in HS I decided to go with German.

It seems I am incapable of learning a forgein language though...does anyone have any tips?

Thanks much.
