So long as you're not using the nomad engine and thruster, any combination is possible, regardless of the ship's affiliation.

Everyone has their opinion - and sure, they're entitled to it. But it's really as simple as the two lines I quoted above.
Almost as if it looks like a complicated AF puzzle, when there's a really simple solution when you think about it.
If you want progression, take Xenon's route. RP with the GMG to use that cool AF blue flame, send out a comm.
If you just want to use that cool Core thruster, go out and buy it. Nothing wrong there.
Just let people do what they wish with engines.
