Practice over the last decade shows that if there is a way to abuse the rules one way or another, the players will do it. Not every single one, but the majority. And now with 2.3 in effect, there's even a bigger way for a person who cares nothing for roleplay to just grief a player that might be cooking something up with a character that is just slightly hostile on the rep sheet or has a bounty on them.

Honestly, I've seen the opposite. What I've seen is countless examples of either the vagueness of some ruling, or its theoretical abuse potential getting people riled up about how exploitable it is, and then in reality nobody actually abusing it in practice.
There are in fact countless ways you could play the game that is technically within the rules but clearly not intended to be done and wouldn't you know it, people generally don't do those things. I guess it just isn't as easy to see the absence of bad deeds than their doing.

But that's why the server's literal rule 1.0 reads: "Don't be a dick. It's a game, try to keep it fun for everyone playing it. Behavior that falls within the technical letter of the rules but not the spirit won't be tolerated."

Whilst I think consequences for not being able to recall an encounter will vary, there is a part of me that feels it's a bit crappy that a player's roleplay will be undermined by their ability to PvP.

Lowkey if such rules are implemented I think the bar and gameplay consequences for PvP need to be significantly reduced ie the game needs to become much easier, and much more arcadey.

The game already favors PvP and it always has. I know that it is a roleplay server (or so the title says), but roleplay does also include playing the role of the antagonist, and I do believe that many people have forgotten that you are meant to HAVE an actual enemy for story to be of any interest to outsiders and for it to retain momentum. The domination of PvP 'over RP' (is it? idk. It feels weird even uttering it as the concepts go hand in hand and aren't meant to be opposite each other) is a fact that is not changing, and I think it is disingenuous to come out and write about how the game should become more arcadey purely because there's a risk that not every interaction with end with your character making it back home safely and soundly.

Never said it hasn't favoured PvP. Just can't help but feel like balance would lean even more towards it. There can still easily be a skill gap if the game is made more accessible. It's just comparatively when I think of the games I've played that do have these rules, the skill gap between myself and an opponent feels much smaller (eg DarkRP or NWN) as compared to Discovery.

So what's the reward for doing all these things? I'm not including faction perks as 95% of these already have been a thing prior to your "rework".

Quote:2.3 - Dead men tell no tales - when you are destroyed during a hostile player encounter, your character loses all memory of that encounter, other than that their ship was destroyed.

As everyone, after a good rest, the more I look into the game and more it makes no sense. Consider Nomads/Wilds/Vagrants/Wendigo, they are all mindshare. One seeing a thing even after destruction, the other saw it. I think we can also consider that the amnesia can be a RP thing that would happen ONLY if the character RPs that way.

As for bigger ship than a snub, there are many humans onboard so, all of them would get amnesia? Nah- ain't going to work...

I understand that because OF will have more privileges and more impacts, maybe to continue to brewing the rule 2.3?

RE: Official Faction rework and rules update - TheSauron - 01-09-2026

I feel like the rule should've received its own discussion thread.

Ahoy! Imma try getting an answer here:

So, can I ask how a person logging one hour a month is deemed to be an active member?

I mean, I can just get a snub for any of my mates, and ask them to log for one hour a month. Would that make them actual active members? Not really.

This is a very common rule that is applied in many other roleplaying game communities. Here are some examples of how this might work in practice:

1. A Freelancer attacks an Official Faction corporate transport in Sigma-13 to claim a bounty. If the transport is destroyed, the player “forgets” the entire encounter leading up to the destruction and knows only that their ship was destroyed by a hostile force. They cannot then report the freelancer to local authorities, apply FR5, set a bounty on them, or otherwise roleplay based on knowledge of their assailant’s identity.

2. The transport sends out a system-wide message identifying their assailant before their death. The transport loses knowledge of their assailant upon being destroyed, however a 3rd party witness could contact them to provide copies of the message. The transport player can now roleplay based on provided 3rd party evidence (although the assailant will probably argue that this is circumstantial at best, unless the witness caught them red-handed).

3. A Freelancer attacks a freighter to claim a bounty. The freighter successfully flees, and docks on a station. The freighter is a combat ship, so docking means it is "dead" for PvP rules. Despite this, the freighter was not actually destroyed during the encounter, meaning it remembers its assailant.

Are you all mad? Has the staff lost their collective minds with this one?

What fruitful outcome can you possibly hope to achieve by forcing collective amnesia on the entire player base? Do you have any idea how many stories, how many rich in-rp rivalries, how much character growth has come, from the near death experiences players have faced with their characters? You want this to be a roleplay server and you're going to force people to omit perhaps the singular most formative event a person can experience from their writing?

I might as well delete every single character I have and pretend the ones I no longer do never existed.

+1
That is ..... very stupid idea.
Just one question: When will the Staff team find ................ ( courage) and rename this server Discovery Freelancer PVP 24/7? Then there's no need to invent new rules and waste your time on this nonsense, just one rule: Kill everything that's red.

Oh so we're just ruining Discovery even more? Yikes.

RE: Official Faction rework and rules update - Jazzi - 01-09-2026

I am very glad to see this thread and its contents. Some new ideas, some agency returned back to rp environment, and some consequences.

I too am interested in the results of this litmus test and ponder how PvP may come to dominate some folks RP who are attempting to express themselves and their stories. Despite the worry, I have faith the majority of folks in this community are mature enough to understand that this community and the mod lives or dies on how we treat each other though. Enemies in game perhaps, but friends (or at least kind to each other) ooc. Time will tell, with fingers and toes crossed.

RE: Official Faction rework and rules update - Lemon - 01-09-2026

Clarification - is it when you are destroyed or PvP Dead? In other words, if I RP, get shot, hug bases, while RPing or circling my cap, dock, and am PvP dead but not destroyed - I can still RP away, right?
It happens often that someone comes to just hunt blues. I just RP while doging and then get to dock while they well, stay silent.

The rule just makes PvP less likely - if I log to RP and someone else to PvP - I won't risk giving a duel obviously, or I have to have amnesia every time - so I wonder if I have it even if I dock but am pvp dead.
