Jinx, your proposal is great and definetly goes to my top list. I will hold this contest for another 10 days or so to see what can people come up with, also gives me time to write the stuff down and post (due to RL workload - i need time).

However, the idea looks really good and I even liked the sunsail idea, something that we can implement as a nommie research rp and coming up with some implementation, with changes of course, need to talk to Yuri about it first.

Very good design, I congratulate you dearly.

Very interesting concept Jinx. I like it.

can you just put an osiris model by it just to better see the scale of this completely awesome model!?

' Wrote:of course - its a totally undetailed model consisting of like 200 polygons ( normal warships have 12000 )

its just a concept - rand only spoke of a concept contest:laugh:. -

about the problem with such a sunsail ... firstly - yes.. sunsails are not freelancerlike. - freelancer uses solid solarcells and solar reflectors. - but if such a sunsail would exist - it would be made highly translucent AND of course not being included in the hitbox.

the effect would then be that it was only a thin foil that you can fly through ( well, we got no real physics... so it cannot tore )

the main design aspect is rather the missing engine though and the heavy lifter like claws for when the ship is supposed to move.
when it comes to a stronghold of greater proportions - it is indeed the freelancer way to pick a large rock and build a base in. - thats cheap, solid, and can be made a real battlestation. no one in their right mind would actually build such a large ship.

Jinx, the solar sail idea is almost exactly right, although I don't know how it would be used to generate power...

If you can find it, read "Wind from the Sun" by Arthur C Clarke, everything you could ever want to know about solar sails is in that story, despite the fact that it may very well be pure sci-fi.

Note: trying to get an image down on paper is harder than I thought.....but I have come up with a name for it. How about "Cheops" as in the largest pyramid out there, it sticks with the Egyptian naming theme...

interesting concept... very original, but aesthetically not my favorite.

Ok, so I've kinda figured out that I'm not really good at putting and idea down on paper picture.

I did try, honest, but came up with a series of boxes on a peice of paper :$

I think I'm a little better with words, however, so lets see how I go at creating an image in peoples heads using them.

Just as a guide, I'm going to use the Osiris as a comparison. I'm thinking twice as long, 4-5 times as wide and 3 times as deep.

Imagine...

A large asteroid of the type you find in the field around Planet Toledo or maybe in the Badlands in New York.

It's big, much bigger than the usual asteroid.

It's fairly flat, mostly due to the size of it and long and deep as well. The Osiris is small in comparison.

A trench has been dug along the axis of this huge rock, towards one end, large enough to put an Osiris class BS into, like putting it into a cradle.

An Osiris BS has been 'parked' in the trench and the rock melted so that it flows back around the ship, trapping it there, half in, half out.

Openings have been bored into the 'front' of the asteroid and the forward ends of derelict BS have been forced into them, leaving the bows outside the rock.

Enough space is between them to dock a BS for repairs.

Along either side are two docking ports for fighters and many turrets dot the surface.....

I like it ... but it ... wouldn't that sail be vulnerable to all attacks ... i think even fighter can pierce it with his guns ... i mean its looks cool ... but i think normal engine design would be better protected ... but it really looks amazing:D

or ... if its designed to turn sun energy to power or what ever ... then shooting with energy base weapons on it would only give more power to ship ... but then again if you fly strait at it you can rip it apart ... or that sail would be done with some extra ultra tough material ...:Di mean RP wise

Edit: I mean on Jinx version

' Wrote:right - here s another idea.. ( a more serious one that time )

how the ship is designed:

the whole ship is roughly barge size ( without the sunsail ) - so around 4 times longer than the osiris ( or 2 times longer than the zoner juggernaut )

its pretty wide due to the extensions, too - and as tall as the barge. - the basic design is of course - liberty-like. ( but not osiris like )

it is not a "common" shipdesign. - for one.. it has NO engines. - most of it is used up by habitational modules and other sections - while it doesn t need 1/3rd of the whole ship as a reactor / engine like the osiris or the dreadnought.

so the whole ship is practicly immobile - but you also see the two large "claws" on either side of it. - each one is large enough to "dock" with an osiris. - so if this ship was about to become mobile - it would be two osiris battleships to manouver it in teamwork.
as a more stationary base, - that is also meant to be more independent. - it features a gigantic sunsail. if this ship is meant to have a powerful base defense. - it needs a lot more energy than the basic station. - so while a large civilian station like freeport 1 has two large sunbeam reflectors - this one would need more.

the sunsail itself could of course be retracted to allow it to move.

i can break this design up into several "modules" like a normal freelancer base - so you can place the parts into the system like a starbase - or i leave it to be one single model ( which makes it easier to hardpoint )
the whole design is extremely large - but mostly due to the sunsail. - i think the idea of a large shiphull being tugged by two battleships is better than having one dreadnought of rediculous size with an engine as large as a moon.

Oh wow.....Just....wow....

Do you think the Order would resort to solar sailing? Maybe just putting normal engines would be okay. I like the model, I do, but I don't think the method of power is fitting.

Still going, so far Jinx idea is pressing on as the possible candidate.
