As far as I'm aware, commands /renameme and /restart were causing crashes.

Removing a variable helps to pinpoint the cause of crashes. Even if the player limit was NOT the cause of crashes, it was something that had to be taken into account. Eliminating it narrows down the search. Simple as that.
