Fairplay vs Roleplay - Cellulanus - 09-26-2008 A mixture of each. Is the pirate stupid enough to attack you near a major planet or battleship? Let him have it. Did that cop follow you all the way back to your unlawful base? Let him have it. Are you engaged in the middle of nowhere/tradelane/unimportant station/edge of some nebula or asteroid field? Play it fair. Did that guy just do something that attracted negative attention from the whole system? Let him have it. Is he being sneaky? play it fair. Fairplay vs Roleplay - Athenian - 09-26-2008 I vote fair play. Obviously my view on this is somewhat influenced by this evening's less than fun events. 1. The experience of getting ganked while my mouse batteries had gone even though I pm'd my opponent to ask him to hold up. 2. The five guys, inlcuding the fast gunship, who chased me from near the weapons platforms at Alcatraz, even though I said "too much flak" and tried to flee away anyways in my fighter. The ooc messages telling me that "dead men dont talk" was particularly classy. Ever hear of escape pods? Most of the "RP" justifications here just translates as "gotta get a kill message". I don't mind losing fights, but where was the fun in all of this? Fairplay vs Roleplay - Culebra - 09-26-2008 ' Wrote:A mixture of each.Pretty much. Overwhelming force when you are near the enemies base is fully within RP and it makes logical sense to boot. Fairplay vs Roleplay - Athenian - 09-26-2008 So it's okay to pursue a HF using gunboats and fighters? I'm sorry but I have to disagree. I've seen lone xenos getting swarmed near Manhattan and I think it's pretty unreasonable. Follow using fighters by all means, but gunships can gank a lone fighter anyway. There is such a thing as sportsmanship and when RP doesn't extend any further than killing enemies then there is little fun in playing this game. And the "shut up" thing when you are trying to bring some semblance of a RP to a event like this gives a pretty clear idea of what these players were in the game for. And the "shut up" thing when you are trying to bring some semblance of a RP to a event like this gives a pretty clear idea of what these players were in the game for.It is not unreasonable. What is unreasonable is for a Xeno to fly that close to Manhattan, the capital of liberty and expect a fair fight. Sorry but that just doesn't make any RP sense to me. The Xeno should be striking at the shipping of Liberty to bring down the establishment not attacking the capital. Fairplay vs Roleplay - Athenian - 09-26-2008 Sorry if I wasn't clear - I'm not talking in orbit - I'm talking in the vicinity of the planet - even in the debris field to the north I've seen literally eight or nine ships including gunboats chasing one ship. This isn't me, mind, in the xeno ship, but I am sitting there thinking. "Is anyone actually enjoying this?" or more importantly, "is the guy getting whupped unmercilessly enjoying this?" All the RP justifications you like can be used to explain any use of any force against an enemy. The point is, this is a game, and within reason, it should be fun for everyone - even the idiot in a small craft who managed to run into a large fleet. At least giving someone a chance to escape provides an opportunity for some level of interaction other than exchanging fire. Fairplay vs Roleplay - Culebra - 09-26-2008 Well I agree to a point it should be fun for everyone BUT...someone who picks a serious underdog like a xeno should know what they are getting into. It seems strange to me to say you want to RP the underdog then whine when you are treated as such. I honesly would expect the same treatement if as a Junker I went into Kusari. I would not later complain that I got jumped by serveral ships, becuase I would expect it. Fairplay vs Roleplay - X-Lancer - 09-26-2008 Fair play comes first..RP comes second...if there are no fair play..what ever the game is..no fun what so ever.. Fairplay vs Roleplay - Athenian - 09-26-2008 This is begging the question - you're using the RP scenario (xenos=underdogs) to justify a pro-RP argument (underdogs get thwacked and should accept it). My point is that it's more a question of fair play being balanced along side role play (xeno=underdog; underdog gets thwacked but at least let's remember there is another person playing here and let him enjoy it at least). As to the underdog thing: there's a world of difference between being an underdog and being an insect. An underdog at least has a fighting chance. Not of winning, nor even of escaping, but the player will certainly like to at least leave (even after getting shot down)knowing they were defiant to the end in the face of the overwhelming odds they faced. On top of this is the question of proportion - do you really need seven fighters and a gunboat to nail that intruder? Well, no. And it's not as if anyone doesn't need to be told that. The most offensive thing to me is the silence - the bloody awful silence that precedes the occasional whupping. Couldn't the gunboat captains at least taunt a fleeing enemy and leave the firing for one of their half a dozen escorts? Look at all the opportunities for a decent bit of dialogue lost... I have no problem whatsoever with losing fights. I probably lose about 90% of them. It's when I have the feeling that I might as well have been playing Counterstrike or Doom that I wonder if there is ever going to be more to video games than killing and shooting. I imagine a Junker going to Kusari would at least get a telling off before they decided to destroy your ship. And maybe they would do you the courtesy of some haughty victorious laughter afterwards. I'd hate to think that you went all that way for silence and gunfire.
