Steering back onto topic.

Sounds delicious.

If he wants to make it discovery exclusive then that is fine with me. We may even get to have a conglomerate of mods.

At first glance as the model lead dev... the amount of detail your engine would offer is tempting - but it would mean redoing just about every model and then some. What you are suggesting is to port Disco to a different game system. Unless you'll be keeping the syntax compatible, that's no small task.

I think, perhaps, FTW does not mean what you think it means, given how you used it...

I can imagine this meaning a hell-load of work for the devs. But... isn't it totally worth it?

And who exactly gives a damn right now?

It might be... but given 4.86's development cycle, I'm worried just how quick we'd be able to pull this off.

I'm going to have to chime in on Hades' side here. Discovery isn't exactly the most innovative of mods, nor the fastest working. Discovery is popular by merit of being popular - I can't figure it out, personally, it's a recursive cycle. In any case, if you ask the Devs to port over the entirety of Discovery onto a new engine, you won't hear back from them until 2021, and that'll only be to announce some unfortunate delays to progress.

Freeworlds are the folks I'd be looking at. They've done some utterly unbelievable stuff within the FL engine, so I'd love to see what they could do with a new one. But yeah, if you want any help from trusted people, Cannon, Adoxia and the Freeworlds lead-devs would be your go-to guys. They're basically deities in the FL modding scene.

EDIT: I'm also agreeing with Hades about escopton. Seriously. Wat.

Honestly guys all gripes about current dev team aside, the reason no freelancer mod team except freeworlds is holding down a decent dev team that works fast at the moment is that the freelancer engine simply sucks. DX8 graphics, low poly limits (freeworlds had to hack the exe and use workarounds to put their star destroyer ingame and not make the game engine have an aneurysm + w0dka can crank out new code for it because he doesn't have to worry about stamping down hordes of cheaters like cannon does), cranky physics and quite frankly a ridiculous model development cycle (can be summed up by milkshape being crap).

Ranting aside, if there was a proper prospect here for a game that would let artists and coders alike show off their work at their best rather than having to continuously work around the limitations of the engine, not only would the disco dev team be much bigger but the enthusiasm would also be much higher and the feature list would be much longer.

In short: if this engine really is being developed like this then I as a dev team member am looking forward to seeing it and working with it. Lets hope the project doesn't burn out, because discovery is fast approaching its limits as it is and we need something like this to push the envelope.
