The freedom is there already, as long as the rules are followed. For example: Code: *the approaching ship maintains radio silence and doesn't respond to hails* A couple of messages like that, along with some time for the opponent to react to it should be enough to respect both the spirit and the letter of the rules, as long as your ID allows you to engage that target. And in a way, it may be better for RP atmosphere. There is no need to reiterate it. Do you think that people saying "Time to die pirate!" before shooting is RP? No. It's just a way for them to avoid Bastile. Some people like it, some don't. But hey! Let's force all to like it. What a good idea! Forcing someone to say something is equally bad to forcing someone to remain silent. You need to keep in mind that, in the game, we communicate with written chat messages instead of something like a voice chat. It wouldn't be cool if you get engaged while typing, for obvious reasons. Catbert posted a good example of an engagement notice, which doesn't require your character to talk awkwardly. I feel like this is a very good compromise. So not sure what is so bad about having to write in game. As @Catbert even explained, it doesn't have to be "spoken words" roleplay. Happy playing. *waves you a goodnight* RE: Official Faction Activity First Quarter 2019 - Lythrilux - 04-05-2019 People are criticising _Sword for his complaint about engagement notices (and to be fair, the complaints aren't invalid), however take a small trip outside of this forums and raise Discovery as a topic of discussion on another online message board and forum, and people overwhelmingly complain about the need for engagement notices (and the large amount of rules). RE: Official Faction Activity First Quarter 2019 - DSE|= - 04-05-2019 I would like to make a suggestion. Take Kishiro Technologies as an example. Because there are substantial efforts put in to become official, why not put the Kishiro Tech into receivership for say two weeks to see if anyone would want to action a take-over. If there is interest in taking it over, then the receivers (GM's) can decide if viable or just liquidate. All we are sayin' is give this a chance. I have never been in a RP community in any game where KOS was a rule allowed except under delicate circumstances, but you seem to be coming from a different spectrum. edit:im done hijacking the discussion sorry RE: Official Faction Activity First Quarter 2019 - Dan. - 04-05-2019 (04-05-2019, 10:48 PM)nevrozac Wrote: you can only see it as as being forced to RP because it's the only server you can still play multiplayer and actually interact with other people. this community was raised in a roleplaying environment as a choice, not being forced to do so. this community existed back when there were PVP dedicated servers you could chose from instead of this "forced RP bureaucracy". what's all your crying about? what exactly do you want? do you want the sudden removal of PVP rules the community has been running by for years just because there are a few hotheads that can't hold it in for 15 seconds? you're the first I've seen to complain about this rule.can't agree more. RE: Official Faction Activity First Quarter 2019 - Zelot - 04-05-2019 God help me, I am about to agree with Snak on something. You can enjoy the game without being official. All those saying people don't take you seriously if you aren't official, I am going to disagree, people don't take you seriously if you aren't serious. There have always been unofficial groups who have been taken seriously. Not to toot my own horn, but people take me seriously, I came back and mentioned that I was going to be playing on my AFA and I have already had people messaging me about doing RP with their factions. Why? Because they know they will get some serious RP and it will be fun for all. Play the game seriously, official or unofficial and people will take you seriously. Mind you, it takes time, it's not an overnight thing, nor should it be. You have to show people something for them to take you seriously. No one is entitled to be taken seriously without proving themselves. The second thing that comes to mind to me in this discussion is that not all NPC factions are created equal and to think that player factions based on NPC factions that aren't equal having requirements that are equal doesn't make much sense. It will always be easier to get consistent activity as a Corsair than as a Bund. Why should the time requirements be the same for a Corsair faction and a Bund faction? RE: Official Faction Activity First Quarter 2019 - Champ - 04-05-2019 Going from official to unofficial and back is not and should not be a big deal. Whether you are official or not does not change the impact of time spent being active on the server, which is the only thing that actually matters. Faction activity should, as @Loken pointed out, be frequent, and not for long bursts, as is done to make up hours for being official, because that contributes to server activity more meaningfully - but I am wary of the workload of more frequent monitoring. Still, it's better than three days in three months. That being said, the workload of switching a faction back and forth is too high. Scrap the CAU8, let factions work for it themselves. Leave the forum-reorganising to the mods, that's what they're there for. Scrap the IDs. If a faction needs to act against the NPC ID, update the NPC ID. For FLHook docking stuff, look, I don't think anything but PoBs should be limited to official faction members. Official factions were to distinguish excellence in role play, character interaction and server contribution - those were responsibilities. Activity hours were to drive a fundamental baseline for server activity so that players had someone to interact with. The ultimate goal is time spent by people contributing good quality activity to the server and forums. If factions dip out of being official, so long as they continue to attempt to provide good activity, that's what matters. Their incentive is to regain official status. And if they don't want it back, hopefully they're playing here because they want to be, and not so that they can keep FR5'ing people. Scrap warnings. Reduce transitional workload. Increase demands. Play for playing's sake. Reward excellence. |
