You don't have to make fuel burn so fast that you are constantly refueling and you don't need to have more than a single unit of fuel to keep moving.
Prices don't have to be raised at all but it would make a "market driven' economy commodity in sectors where h-fuel isn't for sale.

In FL, your character ostensibly breathes oxygen, but upon a quick ship scan there is NONE TO BE FOUND.
Therefore we must waste needless cargo space with other pointless additions such as H fuel, food and drink as well!

It's the ships Life Supports systems that takes care of that. Regardless Fighters are not long range transporters so caring food with them is a personal choice. They can alway buy food when docked.

Life support systems cannot create breathable atmosphere with nothing. They need a source, usually just air. They recycle it however. So a source IS needed, especially for emergancies.
