Lets brainstorm. Name your solution on how to efficiently increase the activity on 24/7 server.

I'll start.
Players online, their ammount is related on timezones: inspect the activity graph to see lowest activity hours to encourgae day/evening time timezones (Just a theory) .

>> To encourage people to play numerous circumstances must be met: Advertising (Aside from giving the link, there must be an encore to visit/use the forum, newcomer must become a member of community asap), Quick guides to the basics of the roleplay (Some encouraging videos, screenshots, quoted roleplay posts as well), an overall advantages of using our mod/server/community ("Imagine a reckless combination of text role game and space shooter..." etc.), An attention to the newcomers - and here I am not talking about the Angels, no, that'd much for them, but every self-respecting official and unofficial group (as well as each player!) must take the Angel's job. Why? Because mostly newcomers ask for a clan to join in. A faction's warm wing will be a good place for newcomers to grow up, to learn and advance, thus preventing ones from leaving or gathering and making much troubles; Community attitude and culture - everyone will agree that we must at least try to keep things on an appropriate level to hold our name as a good community, but not a hive of trolls...

Advertising could be spread through social networks, youtube, gaming forums, etc.
We can try to make a good html template with videos and graphics, also some massive Skype channels for FAQ, help, etc.

Erh...your go now.

I definitely agree to this, a community that isnt welcoming is not attractive to newcomers. A Community that is not attractive to newcomers will sooner or later run out of people.
Be more helpful to newcomers, that should be a really good first step for everyone.

Completely agreeing on this one. The question is exactly where would it be appropriate to advertise this mod?

The idea of advertising becomes even more imperative now that SC appears on the horizon, and now that we have too many systems for the mod. The main target audience is people who like Rp and old freelancer hands; identifying them is the main thing.

I'm all in for online adds. Just how would we do it in practice?

RE: Online activity - Oorn - 07-15-2013

Attracting people? Lets see...
Short term:
1) Advertising, FB/YT wouldnt do much good. We wouldnt get much people, and those we would will only make things worse. If, however, we get some big LPer to try out disco things WILL work out, otherwise dont bother.
2) Advertising, RSI and other SC places. That could work, Dsicovery has surprisingly little presence there.
3) Factions camping Penselvania/NY systems and recruiting players 24/7. Will do wonders in having new players actually stay.
Long term:
4) Fixing map, universe requires some (a lot of) reduction in size. Make it that players actually meet each other.
5) Combat, oh how boring and broken it is. What the hell TZ is suposed to be used for? Now its only use is abuse. And i wont even desribe how boring fighter pvp is. What I would love is not just "fixing mistakes", but rather rebalance from ground up. With new combat, MANY freelancer players will at least try it out. As always, i recomend flak88 mod for reference.
6) Dont be afraid of wipe, if it is needed for new galaxy. Very few will leave, and will eventually come back.

P.S. 0) fix Comunity
EDIT: bad, bad phone, making me do all those edits.

RE: Online activity - Karst - 07-15-2013

One of the most glorious moments in all my disco time was when a noob asked me, on my ALG, "are you an angel?"

I nearly cried, it was so touching. I realize he probably just asked that because he had heard of the Angels and the ALG tag apparently sounded sort of like Angel, but- it was a very heartwarming moment nonetheless.

Anyway, those are some good ideas. I suppose the best way of advertising would be people that are active in other rp-oriented communities talking about disco. I mean, the main draw for me, and I suppose most people that play on this server is "it's a roleplaying game.....with spaceships!"
Focus on bringing that to people that might be interested in such things and it's all good.

RE: Online activity - Croft - 07-16-2013

I think there should be some incentive to join/create factions, it can't of escaped notice that there are very few tagged ships on the server these days and those mini-communities are important as they give a sense that you are flying about in a living world. Specifically the official factions, after all they are supposed to represent the House/Company/Group of their ID.

I'm not certain what could be done to improve things without limiting the freedom of indies and unofficial factions, perhaps that's the only way, limiting the big toys so that people will band together to keep them.

/signed, I keep saying it myself, so I'll reduce my postings in this thread to agreeing on this point.

Good place to advertise the mod should be the SC forum:

/signed too. I mentioned this a couple of times too, and it seemed quite logical to me.

Nowadays people don't have much to trade for. And activity is mostly around trader-policeman-pirate scheme. And no, adding superexpensive thingies won't fix it, since only few will still fly for them.

RE: Online activity - Potter Harry - 07-17-2013

Revamp the mod to not have countless of unnecessary garbage and annoying gimmicks cluttering you up wherever you go. Quantity is not equal to quality.

It's also an idea for everyone (I'm not pointing fingers) to change their attitude to be less bitter. You can't say it enough, but Freelancer is a game. Stop complaining about every small thing the moment you get the change. Behavior like that just holds you back from actually playing the game for the sake of having fun, and others witnessing your complaining most often than not get annoyed, which even further corrupts the atmosphere of the entire community. Try being a bit more carefree, it works great for me for one.
