My sister's boyfriend is from Detroit, and from his stories, yeah, I'll believe it.
Apparently, the city is like two-thirds empty. And he mentioned an abandoned insane asylum that still had insane people deep inside.
Basically, the industrial part of the US no longer makes things, so now they're broke.

The town has a debt of about 26'500 Euros per inhabitant. Actually, I think we got some towns which are worse than that in Germany. Big difference is, though, that those still have industries around ... for the Moment. Would be bad if the same happened here, though I guess the circumstances around here are different and due to the more limited space people don't just move away.
700'000 people living there, 1/3rd in poverty, thousands of properties unused and uninhabited...
Really doesn't look good for the town. Wonder how many people - or how few? - people got damn rich via that town and then left it to rot. Guess that's the accepted scheme though: a few get rich, thousands suffer.

Detroit has always been used as the posterboy for urban decay. I guess Sheffield here in the UK filled the same slot when the steel industry went into terminal decline in the eighties. A sad commentary on the nature of capitalist societies (or more probably human nature. Other socialist models haven't done much better)

Sindy is right, because that means someone like me is going to make the notation that Detroit has suffered from one party leadership since 1961. It's not the capitalist society the you mention, Stoat - it's the progressive liberal democrat policies. You can continue to tax and spend until you run out of other people's money - this is a prime example of what the end result is.
The ironic thing is, of course, how Detroit was a political hot button in 2012 - with the commentary from Obama that he 'saved' Detroit from bankruptcy. Only to have it fail a year later.
What would be more relevant would be a discussion of how the media in England is reporting more honestly and truthfully about what is happening in the US than what OUR media is doing - including, of course, Detroit.

I'm from west Michigan, and I hate how Detroit just drags down the rest of the state (which does quite well, otherwise). I wish they'd just sink Detroit into Lake Erie, or turn the whole place back into farmland.

When the human augmentation market becomes big, David Sarif will open Sarif Industries in Detroit, and help the city recover, minorly.
