I believe this question have been quite commonly asked when freelancer just started, and as far as I remember there is a program somewhere out there that you can get to enable joystick interaction. But I also heard that it is not as good compared to mouse flight and I am not sure as well if that is allowed in DiscoGC

Yes it is possible, you just need emulator program in order to do it. I see no reason why it should not be allowed, also the aiming with joystick would suck, however if you do it properly you might be able to use mouse for aiming and joystick/controller for the rest.

I am right handed and I imagine flying , using joystick, with my left hand and aiming with my right...my poor brain...
