Vanilla Turret Animations - eigos - 08-08-2013

In my own server, I spawned some weapon platform turrets (which I mounted on my armored transport) and played around with them.
As some of you remember, some turrets have double barrels and dual projectile animations. I will list a couple of them here:
- Large Transport Turret (the one used in the Gull and Albatross, dual white animation)
- Rheinland Battleship Heavy Turret (the tripple green trail ball animation, like the current BS cerberus, but with 3 balls instead of one, turret model has 3 barrels)
- Weapon Platform Laser Turret (both civilian and pirate versions, with dual projectiles)

Currently, we have double- and tripple barrel turrets for transprots, all the way to battleships, which fire only 1 animation. You can already guess what Im going to say next: that doesent make sense.

So I wanna ask the dev team, how hard is it to make those dual projectile attacks a reality for player turrets? The current battleship cerberus turrets are supposed to be tripple-barrel artillery, why are they launching a puny green ball, instead of 3?

RE: Vanilla Turret Animations - Hell Hunter - 08-08-2013

Fps issues I guess? Would be way too many particles. But I'm probably wrong.
It's probably because it's just easier to do 1 large projectile

RE: Vanilla Turret Animations - Jinx - 08-08-2013

we can make one projectile look like 2 bolts or 3. that is not a problem - or not too much. - it is only cosmetics ( still one projectile only so no server strain )

it is a bit of client strain though, because the client would need to render a few more particle effects

also the distance - especially on battleships - might make tripple shots kinda "fuse" into one big blob anyway - turret camera is usually quite far away - and from that distance it is not always easy to see how the turrets look anyway.

turning the barrels into ACTUAL barrels is also possible - but then it presents some serious balance and server issues.

the server would need to track more mobile objects - and a double barrel also has a chance to deplete shields AND damage hull in just one shot

if you want them to look like 2 projectile, just teh cosmetic change, - you can try editing the .ale file - i think its the ale - if you manage it for the appropriate turrets - i am sure it can be included in the mod.

but atm - ale editing is a bit tedious - and those cosmetic changes were simply no priority at all.

We should totally make the MR a shotgun rather than a little mini projectile with a big hit D:

BS cerbs must launch 2 projectiles, but not 3

it is hardpoint change, add few "Fire" hardpoints and you get more projectiles

RE: Vanilla Turret Animations - Kazinsal - 08-08-2013

Problem is multiple HpFire hardpoints cause the firing sound to not work.

@bela:

yes - and by doing that you run into the problems that i pointed out. - if you want the looks but not the problems - you must do ale editing. - so the easy way out as you describe it - is not best one without seroius rebalancing.

HERE is what I mean. Took me 1 hour with that stupid IPv6 that kept me from joining my own server.

As you see, Kusari, Rheinland, Bretonia and Liberty have dual barrel and dual animation turrets from Vanilla.

There is also the Civilian dual turret. Couldnt find the Rheinland Heavy BS turrets (or rather, Im lacking the patience to find them) and mount them on my Pelican.

EDIT: I read the posts above (didnt expect that many replies), it will definetely make sense to make dual and tripple animated turrets. Damage source would be single anyways, no server strain whatsoever. There are far too many multi-barrel turret models that simply dont make sense with a single animation. Oh, and nice idea about the fighter MiniRazor - it definetely needs a new animation IMHO.

I vote for making a poll on the subject...(but something tells me I will get yelled at for doing so).

RE: Vanilla Turret Animations - Syrus - 08-08-2013

In vanilla all multi-barreled turrets had multiple shots fired at once.

I think it would look nice and I suggested it before, but I was told that it'd be too much work - and that we'd lack someone to do it. Makes me wonder why it was even changed from vanilla.

Thing is, also, if the turret fire two shots, each shot really counts as a shot, as I understood it.
Of course you could just double up the effects ... but ... well, it'd be most beautiful if the turrets could fire alternating between the barrels - yeah, pretty sure that's not or not easily possible. Just a little "what'd be best".

Anyway, going back to the way vanilla handled the turret's firing, with it firing three shots at once or at least looking like three shots at once, would be best and should be doable.
