Why do versions take so long? - tothebonezone - 09-07-2013

Okay, semi-rant here.

Why does it take years for minimal changes to come about the mod? As far as I'm aware, all that's happening in 4.87 is--

New Weapons

New Systems and systems being removed

New Infocards

New ships/models

What, pray tell, do you guys do that takes so long to get these done?

New Weapons are just a matter of assigning a name, tweaking already existing effects in the ALEs (I learned how to do ALEs for engines in two and a half hours, don't even start saying it's difficult) and roughly throwing numbers for balance at it.

There's programs out there that literally generate new systems with fields, stars, planets, you name it, and gives you a file for it. You can tweak them to your liking, and I highly doubt it takes an extensive amount of time for that. (Unless you're busy making 5 planet clusters again.)

Infocards are done by typing out three paragraphs of information that's relevant to the location.

And models are literally thrown at you by the community.

So why in the world do we have to be told to wait another two years for balance fixes? For a ship that looks like an aborted Firefly to be remodeled? (Even if the Annapurna is hilarious for it) Or for a handful of numbers to be reduced by like, 10, on fighter guns?

The new .8X version timeframe is irrelevant. I'm more concerned as to why things that should be taken care of within the following weeks ends up being a two year wait that isn't actually a guaranteed thing?

I'm certain I'll receive hatred from the brown-nosers, but after personally attempting half of the crap the development team does, I just can't understand.

How does it take so long?

Having personally tried out the rest of the half the crap the team does, I'm convinced that this delay is literally the dev team being unable to get stuff done as a group and therefore changes don't get made and none of them are motivated enough.

And before the dev team jumps in here and tells us that if we think it's so easy, why don't we do it... okay. There are a fair number of us who would happily take over if you want out that badly, devs.

Thats not all thats happening, the storyline is advancing, gallia takes leeds, jumpgates are destroyed, presumably the Liberty and Omicron wars advance aswel, ect.

Also i presume moddling, balancing and stuff take ages.

RE: Why do versions take so long? - Kazinsal - 09-07-2013

Modelling doesn't take ages. Balance is literally mapping numbers to rough statistics and testing it a bit to make sure it works.

Storyline stuff like this wouldn't take two years to implement if it were released gradually.

Storyline != massive, time consuming changes. At all.

That's really all I have to say about that.

Becase reasons.

(Which I'd rather not discuss on a public forum at this point in time.)

RE: Why do versions take so long? - Kazinsal - 09-07-2013

Translation: Because none of the dev team can agree on anything to get done and how to do it so nothing gets done and no one has motivation to work on anything.

Feel free to tell me I'm wrong. In detail.

RE: Why do versions take so long? - Hone - 09-07-2013

Well from when I worked for the devs on infocarding I suppose I can guess...

As Ive heard 4.87 is ready for release. but problems with cheaters delay that.

Could it be, just maybe, because they have jobs?
