why is there not a /moveship? - lIceColon - 11-06-2013

The fundamental idea of buying a new ship is not to buy a char but the ship itself (since I love my stats and rep so much), so why don't/can't we have a /moveship command?
Surely it can't be that difficult to implement, technically speaking, right?
I would like to (re)open this for discussion, let's root out all the problems related to /moveship and try to solve it one by one.

to list the issues with /moveship that I can currently think of off the top of my head:
-where does your current ship go?
-your equipment?
-the new ship's equipment?
-stuff in the cargo hold?
-rep?
-stats?
-rep of the new ship?
-charname?
-abuse?

Alternative:
-/tradeship?

Discuss.

...? We do have that... unless I'm confused.. I move ships between accounts all the time...

I'm sorry. I'm confused with the post. Read it a few times.. still don't get it though.. w/e. Don't mind me.

...there is definitely a /movechar command.

Unless you mean just the ship, leaving the character starflier'd? I dunno what you mean.

I mean just the ship and maybe the stuff on the ship, while keeping the char

Seems a bit redundant, what with us having the movechar and rename command.

RE: why is there not a /moveship? - lIceColon - 11-06-2013

but i wanna keep my stats n rep, nom sayin?

This seems pointless. If you were flying a ship under a new callsign it'd have different ship ID tags. Thus, you'd have to go around to your allied factions and register your new ship. Your reps would be fixed after doing that.

You can't.

The /movechar or the restart commands for instance simply switch your character data with anther character that was pre-made for the purpose (like the restarts).

You can't "switch ships" like you suggested.

let's say im a freelancer buying another freelancer ship. 2nd hand at a local station to save costs.
then, the "purpose", you say, be? every freelancer has his own purpose, I might want to use a gb as a armored freighter while the guy I bought it from originally intended it as a mercenary, for example.
now he is mercenary so he has acquired bad rep, meanwhile I'm trying to open up trading relations with everyone

that is not how the code for freelancer characters work, though.
/renameme after handing the ship to someone is pretty much all you get to do
This is why there's a market for specifically repped ships/why it's always relevant.
Admins can adjust reps/make ships/characters, I think, but that could be subject to abuse in the wrong hands.
