Ablative armor idea - kikatsu - 11-09-2013

I will just cut to the chase and explain the idea as best I can.

You know when you are, say fighting a transport with a bomber and you snac off a turret instead of hitting the hull? That is the basic idea for this. The concept is for a piece of external equipment that would be invisible and mimic the shape of either the ship's hitbox or shield bubble, probably shield bubble to ensure it works. Basically once the shields go down all incoming shots impact this piece of external equipment and do damage to it instead of the hull... after a fixed amount of damage, the ablative armor external equipment piece is destroyed and damage can go past it to the hull instead now.

This would mean that armor would take damage and need to be repaired and replaced after combat. Unfortunately, because of coding restrictions and the amount of new items... it may not be possible. I doubt any piece of equipment can easily be made to take the shape of a ship's shield bubble...and making individual pieces of armor for all different ship hitboxes is unrealistic.

But I guess this could be done on maybe battleships? There are so few, it might not be too hard to make say Bretonian Battleship Ablative armor....

Random idea is random

hp_mount? Something like the cargo pods with different shapes? I would like that.

I could see it being a thing.

What if all the turrets on the ship were inactive until the ablative armor was destroyed/unmounted? That would add some sort of balance aspect to it.

or takes up a turret slot.

Yay, let's make killing big ships take even longer.

While the idea might sound cool, it's just a complicated way to make ships even more survivable and boring to kill.

It also provides a possible money sink if the armour is destroyed, that's assuming folks don't sundive or something.

I would rather shoot a ship who has that kind of armor then one with a cau 8. Cause if you shoot a part of it you can shoot the same spot again for maximum damage. I don't think it would be worse. It will be more complicated yes.

It would be cool if something like this replaced armor upgrades.
Like Scumbag said, you can hit the same spot over and over again, if you have good aiming skills it might make the fight go faster Tongue

Or. Missile/Torpedo, subtarget. Fire and forget.
