are fighters with spyglass/battleship scanners OORP? - Hidamari - 01-12-2014

Ive been wanting to (thinking about casually to be more accurate) upgrade each of my factions ships with a spyglass scanner, (simply because it didnt sound like it would be oorp like having a battleship scanner. Which would be larger than the actual fighter is several times over)

that is, a massive undertaking.. 3.5 billion currently to do something like that. it took 3 months to save 250 mil from my faction (closed economy remember) we are too small to really do something like this (which is why i asked if their inrp cost would be less than it is displayed, to help me gather the redonculous amount of credits required)

however its come to my attention that the spyglass scanner is actually the same thing as a battleship scanner with a different name?

So isn't it oorp to have this on anything smaller than a very large ship? AND what are the chances that going ahead with something like this will be made pointless by any changes in the future which means fighters cant mount tech like this?

discuss.

In my opinion, yeah, it's OORP. Not only is it stupidly huge, considering it's got the same capabilities as the Battleship Scanner I'd assume it'd take the same power to run it.
"The Battleship Scanner requires vast amounts of energy to operate"
Now consider that's vast amounts of energy in respect to a battleship, so I'm pretty sure a fighter core would simply explode into a firey mess trying to power that thing.

That said, I doubt it's going to be removed/mount restricted simply because that would kind of eliminate the point of having two. Which, I don't really understand why there are two in the first place, but meh, I digress.

Well. I have a Spyglass on my Independant Pirate and The only reason I chose spyglass is because of it being made for fighters. If im not mistaken the Lane Hackers made it to allow them to have an edge in Piracy that other Unlawfuls don't have in their fighters. I may be mistaken again. Though I can understand the Battleship scanner being Slightly oorp on a fighter due to its inrp space taken up it would need the cargospace of well a battleship or a transport. Though at the same time Power but now im getting onto a whole new set of challenges.

tl;dr: Battleship scanners take up alot of Cargo space so I feel they are oorp on fighters while Spyglass were made for Fighters (I think) and thus are understandable on fighters.

Game mechanics, you'd cause more trouble making a rule YOU CANT USE BATTLESHIP SCANNERS than just leaving it as is.

Same reason Zoner battleships haven't been deleted yet.

I for one don't think it's ooRP...but yeah that's just me >_>
In my mind it doesn't need the same power as a Battleship scanner does....I mean if it does then why was it ever made, when the Liberty engineers that made it could just use the normal Battleship one?....Did that make sense? Probable not xD

Edit: Also what Vulkhard Muller said Big Grin

They were originally more effective BS scanners. I never heard of it changing from that. It's from a time when weapon classes were Vanilla and pretty much everything can be equipped on anything. Back then we exercised self control on what to put on our ships based on their lore. It was discovered that people lack self control and min/max'd their ships first and whipped up RP based on it after. Scripting was made to make hardpoints restricting what can be equipped based on a revamped equipment system. The Spyglass scanner is probably an unfixed holdover from those days. It always was very rare and so I'm not surprised of it slipping under the radar.

Incredibly OORP.

The Spyglass array is a scanner/EWar system with a ship built around it, not a plug-and-play module.

I'll not get too far down that road, but no Vulk your lore knowledge here is not correct. By lore they would be more powerful (so mostly likely requiring more power, or at the very least only available for special ships), more expensive and probably larger. Despite the sellpoint on Airdrie, they were designed by Liberty but the original was stolen by what became the Hellfire Legion. I'm not sure if they worked with the Order to make the Resheph version, but either way the Order have them too.
Either of them on a small ship doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's fine for now. Might be ooRP, but not in a harmful way: you could say the same about "experimental and unique" codenames numbering the thousands in our version of the world.

I was going to post saying "wait for Kaz to make people squirm by mentioning his coding about it" but seems he's not went for it. I don't know if there actually are going to be limited to battleships or not.

Well honestly I don't care about their price.. or stats, but at least rename it from Battleship Scanner to something that doesn't include the keyword 'Battleship' in it.

Oh, right, forgot about that.

Yeah, I gotta get on that just to cheeze people.
