Redevelop unused systems into unexplored space. - Ironwatsas - 01-16-2014

Now, as some may be aware, there are a lot of systems in discovery that are barely or almost never used, who's purposes are obsolete or otherwise are slated for deletion. Some systems were designed for factions that no longer exist, while others are guard systems barely anyone uses, and have little RP value, or are hellaciously overbuilt for the faction they represent.

Instead of deleting them, and in the interests of expanding creative RP opportunities, I purpose that some of these systems be given a makeover. Made into unexplored or minimally inhabited virgin systems. Essentially, eye candy systems designed to look as awesome as possible (you will be graded on the same curves as you provided with Cayman and Omicron Iota). Each of these new systems should be somewhat concise with real astronomical phenomena, and with various goodies lying within.

Each one should have some sort of theme. I'd love to see a system with a Blue Hypergiant or a Canis Majoris the size of the New York system in it. As well as a system with a Coronado-esque gas giant with mineble asteroid rings. Or possibly some kind of creepy Homeworld-inspired starship graveyard with various goodies to loot (but littered with radiation, mines, and powerful gun turrets which shoot anything in sight).

The Systems should also have something to make them worth visiting, like rich untapped mineral deposits, codie wrecks, "raid boss" npcs (juiced up nomads, phantoms, eldritch abominations of some sort, etc) which drop awesome loot but take a full fleet to kill, mysterious bases, or other neat stuff to make them worth exploring and fighting over. Alternately, make the systems useful for smugglers or player-base development.

There aren't a lot of 'blank slate' systems in Discovery, and the ones that are are mostly single-asteroid-fields and boring. Someone should atleast stick a quasar in there, or some neat planetary system, or a crazy awesome mining ground. Just go nuts!

It would be nice to see something made out of these kinds of systems, so I support any idea.

Sounds like a good idea. Just dont mess with Illinois.

I want my own ELDRITCH ABOMINATION. I will call it 'elsie'. Good ideas there tho.

TO DO LIST:
  • Release Catgirls into Discovery
  • Feed Zelot to Ame-chan
  • Beat Ktayn in Dance Competition. Become Dance Commander.
  • Yell Explatives at Dab.
  • Install Quasar in Illinois.

Okay then.

Not to contradict myself on 'astronomical rightness', but one idea I've thought of was using the spacey stuff to make a sort of art-pass style environment to give off a sort of theme.

One could easily use the Tau-37 skybox, put a bunch of the "Space Trees" (the spiky asteroids from Alaska/Omicron Delta) reskinned to be brown. A few blue-turquoise clouds in the fringes of the system, and some dust fields closer to the sun, and a few trees. Arrange it radially with the sun and dust clouds at the center, the space forest/blue clouds surrounding it, with the giant asteroids scattered liberally about. And behold! Space mountains!

That'd actually look pretty neat as an Alabama Replacement (it'd be the Oregon system), or as something up in the Taus (space Himalayas).

Yet another thought being a small, Durango-sized planetoid giving off an icy coma, like a comet. How thin and tubey can nebulae or dust clouds be made, anyway?[/b]

You will never touch Illinois as long as I live. >:l

But yeah, the thought of some cool looking places to explore seems pretty cool and I'd look forward to logging again if it happens.

I'd like to donate the whole system of Artois (with Arras being moved into Champagne) to this initiative, should redevelopment actually occur.

I'd echo the same sentiment with the "Maquis Guard" system of Savoie, moving Chambery somewhere else.

But touch Luneburg and you die.

Edit: Chambery could maybe be moved somewhere in the Taus? Or better yet, Omicron-80.

Any of the systems someone has already did something cool to should probably be kept as is. If there's anything important there, atleast.

Personally I feel Gallia is heavily overbuilt compared to the rest of Sirius (and should be deleted from the mod entirely, and the storyline reverted to 4.84 when things made more sense), so their systems need more goodies in there. Considering how expansionist Gallia is, said systems should have something "Anomalous" within to explain why large scale colonization never occurred.

The systems that really need this treatment are the ones that are overbuilt guard systems or remote, boring systems with nothing in them. Since we seem to be dropping 'guard' systems entirely, I'd suggest the following systems be redesigned.
  • Alabama
  • Braunschweig
  • Corse (if it hasn't been updated recently)
  • Duesseldorf big time
  • Faroe
  • Fukuoka
  • New Hampshire
  • Quebec (should atleast have some 'goodies')
  • Sigma-59
  • Sigma-60
  • Tau-39
  • Tau-44
  • Tau-65
  • About half the Gallic guard systems I've never heard of.

As for specific Ideas, I have the following:

Dundee.

It should have a more interesting layout, and a large series of debris fields which were the site of the Kusari/Bretonian battles. Minimal presence from the Gallics or BAF, and with a lot of neat wreckage to salvage or just look at. Probably a few minefields to discourage Gallics from kicking in the door, but otherwise not much of value.

I think perhaps a few small Gas Planets, maybe one of the "Hot Jupiter" type close to the star, and some dust clouds ringing the outer edges of the system. Similar in color to the Leeds smog clouds, but made of fine interstellar dust. A sort of 'wall' facing the general direction of the rest of Bretonia, with the other side of the system facing deep space.

Lewis

If Dundee gets changed, Lewis should too. I was thinking that, in this case, it'd be a giant brown dust field. Scattered inside the dust field are numerous (non dockable) asteroid husks, one of which being Glendale Base or it's Replacement (if any). Since Lewis was relatively important in the Gallic war, it's bases would be kept, but the system otherwise redesigned (possibly turn Glendale into an asteroid base).

The sun should be distant, shining into the otherwise fully obscure dust cloud. The starfield should not be visible from anywhere in the system, but a number of open areas should exist. A few dwarf planetoids should be scattered about, indicating the dust is coalescing into a planetary system, but it isn't molten or as yellow as Omega-9.

The background thought for the system being that the asteroid hollows were actually archeological dig sites disguised as mining operations, launched a few hundred years before the present, and covered up by the Government. The dig sites were forgotten until the Gaians moved in. Then the GRN show up.

A hidden wreck or some bouy somewhere with a neat infocard could tell the story of what transpired. An interesting system but nothing that would contain something like a planet-killing superweapon or anything.

---

Anyhow, this has inspired me to start exploring Sirius to think up new ideas. Find any systems that are boring enough and what to put there.

Anyone else with any neat ideas?
