The Democritus & Gunboat Weapons - Commissar - 03-21-2014

The Democritus is a strange beast of a ship. I love the look of it, but I'm confused as to what exactly I'm meant to do with that one gunboat hardpoint. The ship lacks the core to so much as fire a gunboat missile (which would seem like a rational weapon to me when I've only got one hard-point to use), and a single pulse cannon'll just about empty the core in one shot (forever shattering my dreams of running around pretending to main-gun things). Regular weapons aren't too much better, and tend to eat through that power core too quickly to be worthwhile forgoing another transport turret that could fire for much longer.

How do you ladies and gents use the Democritus? Am I doing something terribly wrong here?

Pretty sure the standard loadout ignores the gunboat option and just puts another transport turret there.

Well last time I flew a Yacht, I had a pulse on the hardpoint and it worked pretty swell. iirc it only has 4 other hardpoints, so you should be able to fire the transport turrets infinitely until it charges again

Bump Democritus's powercore to 200k!

RE: The Democritus & Gunboat Weapons - Luke. - 03-21-2014

I never see them used except for fancy looking armouries.

Why the gunboat hardpoint is there is beyond me. Perhaps IRP defense? Poor excuse considering it's useless anyway. Could probably use a powercore buff.

RE: The Democritus & Gunboat Weapons - Jinx - 03-21-2014

the gunboat hardpoint is no "poor excuse" - it is an element of curiosity, RP and if you want ... a sign of showing off.

after all, this is a yacht - an object meant to show off riches for very little or limited use.

what the yacht tells others is just that : "look here, i can afford an utterly useless ship and i still live in luxory, if you try to get one of those, you will have to make significant compromises in your lifestyle"

to narrow it down - the actual concept of the ship is that:

- be expensive
- be useless
- be pretty ( well, that should / could be revised - cause the current model is at best... classic )

it is not meant to be even remotely useful in combat, trading or anything else. that is the point of "pure" luxory. - just think of a faberge egg. there is no use in those at all, but having one is a sign of wealth.

I love the Democritus. I fly one all the time, I just never really planned to take it into combat so loadout doesn't really matter to me. It's just a fun ship to fly and RP.

Yachts are useful in real life, too. People do all sorts of things on them.

Just because it's a luxury doesn't mean it should be useless. Combat liners are effective in this game. Luxury sports cars are more than just for showoff.

I owned a Democritus for some period of my time here. It's fun, but the gunboat turret really serves little to no purpose.

RE: The Democritus & Gunboat Weapons - sindroms - 03-21-2014

Give the yacht a custom forward gun then. One that shoots confetti or something.

RE: The Democritus & Gunboat Weapons - Nightingale - 03-21-2014

It'd appear to be in need of a new gimmick. Right now, it's a gunboat turret, two countermeasures and a 355 cruise speed for the paltry price of 70 M before it's set up properly. Which in itself is pretty pointless, since 5m/s makes a negligible difference. It's still a solid RP ship, however, if these things do not matter to you, and it's still a light transport, after all. Besides, with two heavy countermeasures... Smuggler's overpriced dream.

I'd love to see another model though, Jinx. It's a bit... angular.
