I am willing to switch to Ubuntu (Hardy Heron - 8.04) with keeping a dirty, bugged, unpatched XP installation for games...

I chose Windows. Why? Because compatibility with other programs is unparalleled with other operating systems. Programs are built with and around Windows on other programs compatible with Windows. I chose Linux for duel boot, because whatever Windows doesn't cover compatibility wise, Linux does. And Linux is free.:)
So Windows + Linux. Vista...Don't even joke about that crap. You can't get Vista off your hands once you've touched it...:crazy:

For games the Vista or XP is a must. I have no problems with it plus you don't handicap yourself what comes to programs and drivers.
Linux. So much more handier at work. More complicated and you can't really avoid the geeky stuff, no matter how fancy or which X you use.
I voted for windows. I have two Vistas (on my desktop and on laptopt) and a RedHat on an external USB drive for laptop. So it's not a multiboot system purely.

why? cause its compatible, cause i know it and cause everything works perfectly fine with it. - i got no reason not to use it. - since i have never used another operating system, i cannot compare it to others - but why should i.... when windows works just the way i expect it to work.

I agree with your opinion, Jinx. But the thing, that forced me to think about a little change was the politics of Microsoft regarding "forcing" the users to "upgrade" to Vista, which I somhow can not stand although I have never even seen the system. Sooner, or later, the time will come, when XP wont have better support(technical, hardware, whatever), than Win 3.11. From what I have experienced so far, here on Linux, everything can be adjusted, everything can be changed, the system works with HW, that has serious problems even on XP and it is for free - open source everywhere around.
The worst problem here, is that Linux is different, than windows. It really needs its user attention all the time and to have a perfectly working Linux (20 seconds to start the PC, 2 seconds to start Open Office...) it really requires the user to be geeky.
The second worst problem is emulating games, for what XP is still better and I am willing to keep it. (But I will try to get FL working here anyway.)

Well, there are many many many distributions, some user-friendly, some really hardcore, some super-small... I think you meant Fedora,( but I do not know almost anything about it, I am the same newb as you are with this OS.)
If you want to try it out, at first, I recommend downloading an installation CD and running the Linux from the CD, so you can try it before installing, formatting disk partitions or anything around that. - its called a Live CD (and you can install the system from it, while browsing net or anything...)
One more thing: If you do not feel like that, better think about it twice before trying something. I am lucky to have my bro, who has had Ubuntu for 6 or so months now, so he can guide me on what to do and what not.
It really is like growing up a girlfriend instead of searching for one.
EDIT: And the graphical effects (compiz for now) are much better and less power-hungry, than in Vista:P

I prefer openSUSE, but in order to run any windows things on it, you have to down load WINE off of a
repository.
I find the repositorys horribly fiddle and pernicious, and they are not friendly with me. WINE doen't even
work that well. I've run a form of Linux on a couple of crap computers and a mid ranged one. I gave up attempting
to learn some bash shell horribly.
You'd be better off finding that one windows adaptation that allows you to have multiple desktops.
I'm not that experienced with it, but i have foodled around with it for a long while.
I find that skype and xfire is on the repository, thats a bonus....
I find that keeping a dual boot with linux is horrible complicated, seeing as converting a hard drive requires
3 different partitions. /:p
I currently have an overpowered computer that I built last summer <8 gigz ram, 2.6 quad core, 1 gig vid ram, Woot!>
I'm running vista, and as long as it doesn't give me problems with freelancer, i'm good.
So, windows. Although i'd rather linux win. <but thats impossible>

Well I have used linux for some time now (specificly ubuntu) and I like it and use it so I'm biased. And as for compatibility with windows programs Wine Emulator works <strike>sometimes</strike>. But hey its virus free. And as for the google os it looks like a cheap copy of mac >.>
And since were talking about the OSs someone should start a processor thread. AMD! All the way!!!
