Regional Plot/Event Teams: How to make Disco dynamic on a small scale - Jack_Henderson - 06-25-2014

The last event (catch the alien convoy) has shown to me that Disco could profit a lot by having more player-driven activity that creates focal point and gives players incentives to log on and take part.

I was thinking how the goal "more events to make Disco feel more dynamic and alive" can be achieved. This is about making the game better and more fun by adding real things to do apart from mindlessly grinding money or mindlessly shooting stuff. Adding a metaplot story makes every rp better.

The only result was: Regional plot/event teams

What are these mythical "regional plot/event teams" ?
It's 1 (max. 2) dedicated person of each active faction in a region. They ask Devs for the general direction the region they are playing in is developing towards and they are responsible for putting these large-scale changes onto the server by doing events that fit into the scenario.

Why can't the Devs do this?
Because the last 3 1/2 years have shown they can't. It is also not their job. They write the summarizer chapter of a book, outlining the general direction and it is us, the players, to make it happen in detail.

Who can be part of it?
Everybody who has fun and skill in story-line development on a small scale. Officials, inofficials... it doesn't matter. A good idea is a good idea, whoever brought it up and made it happen.

Who is not fit to participate?
If you have to win, if you think you can change the map, if you want to conquer systems and if you think you are better/cooler/more powerful than others. This is not about winning.

How many members can be part of it?
As few as necessary. Planning only works in small teams. I will keep those groups that I am planning to try very small. More than 4-6 people will likely not work, but will also not be needed.

What is their "job"?
Creating small events on a regular basis (like 1 per week). These events can be really small scale (like an announced mining operation, 2h long or an announced raid on a system). I doesn't have to be anything fancy all the time (even though fancy is cool), but open to the public and of course it has to be an activity that makes sense irply. If things go right, people will say: "Cool. In 1 hours there is action in Omega 3, let's see... what do I have to log there?"

An Example: the TAU group

Members: 1 OC, 1 IMG, 1 CR, 1 GRN, 1 GMS player who are dedicated and want to work together (on an oorp level) to improve gameplay and depict certain events on the server as they should be in reality.

An open event of this group: IMG announces a mining field day (2h, in which they are in the field), roleplaying "a normal mining day". GRN joins in (when the event is on fully), escorting a GMS convoy to the fields, coaxing IMG miners to fill them for little money. OC, CR and other unlawfuls would come and prey on them, etc. In the end, a dnymic open ended scenario unfolds that is open for many to participate.

As you see... this can be done for special regions easily. Omegas 3/7 group. Or Omicron group. Gallic-Bretonia group. Liberty-Rheinland group. All you need is an area that attracts players and a few creative minds to think of things that you can do there and when to do them.

These groups could focus on adding something better and more interesting than random raids, random piracy, random convoys... random stuff that most players miss because they do not even see it.

Coordinated activity, announced on-server rp, small but fun offers can - imo - turn Disco into a place that offers much more than everyday grind, meaningless pewing and boredom/loneliness.

So... this is the question: What's your opinion on this idea? If you are a person who likes these sort of mini-events, set up a group for your region!

I'll be testing it, whatever the feedback is, but I am convinced that some feedback might help to flesh things things out and make the idea better. So if you are interested in Tau23 and O7/O9 and if you are a constructive, fun person to talk and to fly with... contact me. Smile

Anyway, fire away!

Jack

Intriguing idea, and I'd willingly participate in whatever's on offer?

I assume this would be official factions only? Or should this be open to freelancers and unofficials? I'm unbiased on this one.

inofficials and officials.
I do not care whether a nice idea comes from officials or unofficials.

Edited that into OP.

I like the idea. From a certain point of view, these groups could already be made via SKYPE/forum PMs, could they not? Seems like all you have to do is keep folks in the loop of what/when you want some activity to happen.

I saw this on other FL Mod Community, which I was part of "Event Managers". What we did was basicly plan events on a weekly basis on certain days with rewards. Like PvP matches or Search and Destroy, Nomad hunting events stuff like that specialized Mini events out of Roleplay (of course I'm talking about RP events too). I like the idea I would volunteer, count me in you have my support!

Sounds promising, if there are people willing to contribute and make this happen, then for sure, I dont think any faction that is related to these mini events wont be termed as inactive, atleast in the build up to the event.

Everything said, this solely depends on the willingness of members of factions/ indys. Good luck with this one.

I wouldn't mind making JM put their mark on the Tau storyline. It'd be fun.

The idea is quite interesting, I'd like to participate on behalf of hessians, if this will go further than forum talks.

Yep. That would be nice. Hessians can also do with some activity and things like today's raid could be announced openly and perhaps they could become even bigger.

Omega 9 rp that I am aiming at and that has been loaded in the torp tube, needs some Hessians a lot. I'll make some O7/O9 channel, once my idea is a little more fleshed out. Smile

Makes sense, Lyth. I somehow do not know how to really include you guys in Tau ideas except shooting at you. But likely there are things that can be explored in that planning thoughts.

The Idea has merit. But one would have to be able to put aside any personal bias and ensure that all sides receive treatment (leaving a faction in the dust due to 'forgetting' is like punching them in the crotch.). *shrug*
