Which smartphone - Wraga - 07-28-2014

Hey guys, long time no see...

I would like to ask for you opinion.
I need a smartphone, and since have never had before and I need to use a fix money for it, finally I had 2 options.

Sony Xperia E1 (android) vs Nokia Lumia 520 (WP8)

Tell me your experiences please.

Thank you

I'm partial towards Android so I would go with that.

Depends on what you are trying to do with it.

I recommend getting Nexus/Galaxy series though. Sony Ericson build quality seems to be lower these days. Nokia seemed to be following that lower quality trend last time I used one too.

Honestly, and I know this sounds terribly fanboish, but there is no real rival to iPhone.

Sorry, but I had Nexus, LG, Samsung and HTC Android phones, and the problem lies with android.

Think of it as Linux vs. OS X - the first is very nice and customizable, but the latter is rock solid and polished.

If not iPhone, I'd go for LG's new top models (they are supposed to be the pinnacle of Android) or a Nexus (which is a cheapified version of LG's top-notch handsets that come unlocked at a favourable price).

Also I'd stay clear of Windows on a phone, it is failing hard and no point in jumping on that wagon only to realize that there'll be no apps and no support in a couple of years. You used to be able to get some of Nokias models with Android still, but Microsoft/Nokia recently fazed that out, completely killing any hope of success for the Finnish phone manufacturer.

"I suggest you to buy an android smartphone."

In the end, smartphones are all the same, just at different prices. I'm happy with my 200€ Samsung Galaxy S2, just as others are with their 700€ iPhone 5.

The problem with smartphones is, that their hardware gets better that damn quick, that you'll require a new one like at least every two years to "stay updated". That's why I'd always pick the cheaper option.

Go for the Galaxy series, and in my opinion, android better than Windows 8 in most of the aspects, as far as I have used both.

You should also look at Nexus, pretty good phone. But if you want an option between just those 2 phones, I would be inclined to buy the Nokia instead of Sony Ericsson. Not because of the OS, but because of the build and the looks.

I agree with Mimir

I used to buy Xperia but LG lately is really coming out with good models. I really wouldn't touch a windows phone right now, it really comes down with 3rd party support for apps which iphone comes out on top and android coming in 2nd

Don't go for Nokia. As a company they are going down the pan, also you'll find that the windows store isn't as large as Android or Apple. I have an Android and am very pleased with it.

I can't tell you which phone to buy, but I've had a lumia 920 for almost a year. Yes, it's a windows phone and I have yet to have any problems with it.

It might depend on the user, but I do not have even the slightest issue finding any app in the store, especially with the advent of Win phone 8.1. The phone itself feels sturdy and shows no signs of damage after being dropped several times. This might be purely coincidental, mind you.

I can't agree with Cashew here, even if they were indeed going down the drain (which they aren't), it would hardly speak for their phone's quality. There is an unbelievable amount of fanboy-like behaviour and prejudices not based on any current fact.

Upon being asked why is Android better than Windows phone, the majority of people reply in a somewhat obtuse way, stating that that's what everyone says. (I do not intend to insult anyone here, Cashew, stay calm, will you? Big Grin )

Seriously people, Nokia has it issues, but it's not utter garbage. They've only sold off their mobile division and are now focusing on new fields. Or something like that. I've heard they're into genetic research.

Or they might indeed be utter crap. And I'm a fanboy.

Xiaomi Mi4 Big Grin
Really though, it's damn fast, 4.4 and their heavilly modded Andro version MIUI rocks.

RE: Which smartphone - Wraga - 07-28-2014

As far as I heard the android is far better than the WP8, so its not a question for me, but I have to pick up each of the named 2 phones. Not an easy questions, but since both of them are cheap novadays I couldnt loose much.

Thanks, mucho love
