Invisible pirate demands $3 million, are you in engagement? - Lupusy - 10-10-2008

i was wondering what happens in this situation --

a pirate uses a long range scanner say Endeavour 8k scanner to see his trader. Trader cannot see him because he is using a shorter ranged scanner (say Deep Scanner).

Pirate demands $3 million of trader, and warns him not to cruise or else he cannot re-enter system. Trader says he cannot see the pirate.

Is the trader involved ina pvp engagement at that point? If he cruises to escape or continue on his trading way, is he deemed to have lost the fight and is no longer allowed to return to the system?

(of course the pirate doesnt gain anything if his victim escapes...)

the longest range at which you can scan the cargo and see the target's ship information is 4,000 meters. No pirate should be attempting to pirate anyone more than 4000 meters away, because frankly he doesnt know for sure if it's a trader, a lawful, another pirate, etc. You have to go by ID and ship, not tag.

But assuming he does try to pirate you from such a distance, making a demand does not equate to entering an engagement. The trader can cruise all he wants - hell, any other person, even an enemy of the pirate, could cruise at that distance and never be considered fleeing.

You're only fleeing an engagement if the enemy hits you with a cruise disruptor, or takes your shields below 50%. On top of that, traders/smugglers are considered 'exempt' from the 4 hour rule, they can re-enter the system as long as they didnt start the fight.

There's a completely different RoE when it comes to trader-pirate interaction.

The pirate that demands credits but can't catch the trader simply won't get paid. The trader can return and pass through the system as he pleases. Traders can even pass through systems they died from pvp attacks in.

The admins will laugh at a pirate who tries this tactic and tries to get the trader sanctioned when it fails.

Even worse, if the pirate submits screens with him screaming about 'the rules' at the trader in system chat, he'll get penalized instead.

In short: the pirate needs to be able to catch the trader. Period.

well the pirate could ask for that unknown person to cut their engines, but that person is not required too.
But asking for Credits before even getting close is stupid. For all you know it could be someone in a bs and you in a fighter.
Inshort, get into scanning range before demanding

I do tend to hassle people when out of range, myself... come to think of it - but never for piracy.

Often I'm having to deal with stuff in omicron 100 on my order character, and any names in omicron minor or major that I dont recognize get the standard speech:

Aki.Kimura: "Attention, you are flying in a restricted area"
Aki.Kimura: "Identify yourself and state your business in order space."

If they dont respond, I'll try and get to where they are to scan for an ID, most of the time they end up just being passersby going from alaska to delta or vice-versa, but occasionally I catch an indy nomad or a cardamine smuggler or a bounty hunter in order space that I have to end up trying to fight -_-

tenacity makes a very good point -- the pirate must scan id in cargo and so must be within 4k at least.

* runs black to pirate plotting *

lmao

At 10k when you can select a ship, you can sub-target it and find what guns are mounted on it and from this discern what type of ship it is.

The pirate is the one breaking a rule here. Reinterpreting rules and rule-lawyering in system chat.

or you can press F9 at 10k and it will tell you the name of the ship

Yes but you cant see the cargo, you cant properly pirate someone who has no cargo, they would rather try to get away, they have nothing to loose
