LOVE that game, it has become one of my all time favorites. It's now up there on my list of games I go back to repeatedly with CIV 4, MTW 2, Morrowind/Oblivion, and the Fallout series.
I was playing it a couple days ago and thinking how cool it would be to have a FL version modded for it. If anyone can do it that would be awesome. I'm totally willing to help, although I don't know much of anything about modding.

There was one in development a few months ago, not sure what came of it however. Was fun to see Dreadnaughts leading fleets from so far away.

I'm personally following a mod development for sins from the anime serie Legend of Galactic Heroes (thank you Aidan =) ) and the results are awesome.
