Trying to open some of the ship files into Milkshape - but all are cmp's. How can i convert them into object?

Try that... It should allow you to import the ships into Milkshape, which in turn would allow you to export them as obj files.
Ps. I am not sure if the link is the right one. Might need a bit more searching.

then youll need to convert dds to another format, unless your prog can load dds files
