Player Capital Ships with Docking? - jrgcool35 - 12-25-2008 What do you guys think about this idea. If you could actually dock at the Player Cap ships you see flying around? Another idea that can add-on is what ever the ship had in it's cargo bay could be sold. Just an idea. It could be cool in large battles, if a Cap ship was loaded with fighters, and they would all un-dock in the middle of the battle. It would give it a more, realistic feel to it. Player Capital Ships with Docking? - Drake - 12-25-2008 This gets brought up every couple of months. It would be really cool... However, from what I understand, there are some significantly problems to work out to make it work. Such as, what if the capship logs out/dies/leaves the system while someone is docked with it? If the capital ship would, log off then all the on board ships could be moved to the nearest planet. If the capital ship dies, then everything inside dies. Could someone tell us if it is possible to code something like this? Player Capital Ships with Docking? - Lux - 12-25-2008 I'm afraid Drake is right. I'm not an expert at modding, but from the previous responses to topics identical to this, I doubt it's possible without crashing the server every time something happens. I voted no. (However, Uni passed away recently and Ringy is busy with the next mod.) Player Capital Ships with Docking? - tansytansey - 12-25-2008 Not if we want 4.85 any time soon. The next version after though, anything could be possible. Player Capital Ships with Docking? - guitarguy - 12-25-2008 I know very little about programming, but it seems far fetched. No reason not to hope though, sounds cool. Player Capital Ships with Docking? - Tenacity - 12-25-2008 It's been done with other mods, and since I've been working towards a carrier-class vessel myself I would love to have this option added. How cool would it be to sneak one carrier through the enemy's lines and have a half dozen fighters/bombers pop out to do the fighting =P I dont see it happening in 4.85, due to modding issues, but it could happen further down the line. Now, I think there are further limitations that would need to be placed for this, though. Some that come to mind: -Battleship class vessels can only hold 2-3 fighters/bombers/freighters (no larger ships) within their hold at a time. -Carrier class vessels can hold 5-10 of the above at a time. -You should only be able to 'dock' with a player ship if you are friendly with their tag (like you can only dock with friendly or nuetral npc bases) to prevent enemies from docking with your ship to resupply against you =P What would make this even more useful is if certain ships - carriers and the larger battleships for example - had jump drives, letting them jump across sirius to a specific system fairly quickly (more quickly than manually flying from system to system). That would let a carrier, for example, jump a strike force of fighters to the other side of sirius for a quick surprise attack. It would also make for good defense/retreat strategies. If you're losing a fight, load the fighters up and jump home. If enemies are spotted in your faction's home system, you load up a few fighters/bombers and make a jump home to fight them with a quickly deployed defense. |
