3D Model Software - Incindre - 01-02-2009

Hey I was just looking at some of the stuff on the DAZ community website and it got me wanting a 3D model creator/texturer type software. As you can see from my lack of decent technical terms I am a complete novice in this area. I want to get the best so any idea's on functionality, simplicity and powerfulness* in regards to certain programs?

*(powerfulnicity just didn't work there )

Thanks

Well that depends.

I have laid my hand on the following:

Maya - Horrible interface IMHO too complicated, and yet it is one of the most powerful.

Cinema 4D - Good if you want to save yourself some trouble with things like real physics. However I find it is better suited for the movie industry.

3DS Max - For me this is the best one because it is the one I use, so I might be a little biased. Easy to model.

Bryce - Hated it.

Gmax - Good for starters if you want to go down the 3DS Max road. It's free and it's still around. However it's severly limited.

Houdini - Interface reminds me of Maya, however it could be Maya's contender because it's powerful as well.

Vue - This thing I personally do not recommend for Modeling. However it produces awesome looking pictures with minimal efforts. More of a landscape, atmospheric software. Reason for not recommending it for modeling: A modeling program is like modeling with clay. Vue is like modeling with a hammer and chisel. For those of you who know the terms but don't know what I mean: In Vue you model via booleans and booleans alone.

In any case I use the 3DS Max / Vue combo to suit my needs. Hope this helps.

PS: Try before you buy or you can end up strangling your piggy bank first and then yourself.

Thanks I'll check those two out, and the answer for the program that you made that model thingy is VUE!

(aha! I win even though you pretty much told me)

I use metasequoia. Extremely simple interface, easy to use, decent render engine.
