Academia - PliantReality - 01-08-2009 With the RP of my traveling not-really-mad-but-certainly-not-normal scientist, I had a run in with another scientist-typed character. Which, of course, got cogs clicking in my head. While I doubt it ever becoming officially factionalized, what sort of merit does the idea of a Academic faction have? An organization for sciences and exploration, etc. I think there's definitely a niche to be filled, what with the several exploratory and scientific characters I've already seen. Thoughts about its operations? Or other commentary about the idea in general? Academia - Orin - 01-08-2009 <sigh> If Linkero were around, you'd hit it off with him wonderfully. He was doing just that. A science and research based faction. Sadly, he's been inactive... Academia - farmerman - 01-08-2009 I've been meaning to make a research ship myself, but I've been waiting for the Researcher ID for it. So if something gets organized, let me know, perhaps it can add to things. How would it be? Maybe like some kind of Scientific Union? Forming a collective of scientists and other academic types does sound like a good idea, however. Academia - farmerman - 01-08-2009 Actually I just meant that descriptively, not necessarily as any sort of name. Academia - PliantReality - 01-08-2009 Well, as I conceive it now this scientific community would probably have to aspects to it. 1) Exploration - Fairly straightforward. Gotta find all those tasty gravitational anomalies and interesting astrogeographic (not a real word) features for... 2) Science stuff - this would be less straightforward. This could be anything from - as Dr. Gregory A. Moore did today - hanging around a well known jumphole theorizing and RPing data collection while spouting off big words to gathering slaves, cardemine, pharmeceuticals, and weapons to RP the unethical testing of drugs on human beings. Seriously. Grab bag, go nuts (as I plan to). Or it could be RPing a good doctor giving medical advice to Liberty Rogues and Liberty Navy alike (another thing Dr. Moore has done.) The community aspect of factionalizing would be, very simply, having MORE people to do this with. An explorer could tell a scientist where to find a neat jumphole, and then escort him there fore data collection - that's neat RP to me. Or perhaps two scientists co-op to unify their theory of hypercommunication in order to maximize signal strength through jumpgates. Or something else with suitably big words. Anything I missed? Academia - Dashiell - 01-08-2009 I guess it could work. you can hire traders/smugglers to bring you all kinds of specimens (including nomad stuff and artifacts to spice things up) You can hire mercs, pirates and BH to bring you human samples. Or to "erase" possible competition. mad-rp-characters rule:P we need more of em online. I sometimes find the best RP with nutcases like taco sellers, a flying junkyard and god knows what else is out there:laugh: Academia - NerdRage - 01-08-2009 Wonderfull! look at my sig, i have one research-based char who actually does research. (http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18838&hl=) right now, Dr.Adelaide was hired by a Zoner/Order project that studies how major nomad brains communicate with fighters and minor brains, in an attempt to make a weapon that scrambles and confuses them and make them try to fly into the sun or somthing (or at least thats what they tell him) Right now he was supplied by a zoner grant, in a Zoner destroyer, usually around the nomad-infested places (ran out of money, now trying to find his crew again after payday) it would be REALLY cool if the mod-makers ad some rare anomalies and artifacts, like a small nomad piece of junk in some nebula in a borderworld, or a quasar, unstable jumphole gravitational anomaly or a very new lava planet. i might publish my work on jump-holes soon, i dont have enough time to, with lots of nomad study to be done.. Academia - TDLdark - 01-08-2009 One problem I see. There are probably many research/scientific exploration/etc. orientated characters (I have two myself) but the faction in which they are in are different. I would not have my lawful corporation sponsored research facility work in a group with unlawful order scientists. If this idea is going to fly, it needs to have a cleaner definition of who should be in it. However, my idea is that this league of scientists would work excellently lawful wise, especially corporation sponsored research. This means research characters from all four houses and collaborate and while they might not always get along (GMG and Rheinland for example) it would be more likely that there is some kind of research group based in the houses, as opposed to the less orderly outer systems. My idea is not to really make this a fraction, but an agreement. Character that join will add say a short two or one word addition somewhere in their name to indicate they are part of this (at the end of the name looks nice I think.) ex: Researcher turns into Researcher-A (A for academia) Then I guess the members could call on each other to help out, such as escorts, providing info, updating/sending new information. This makes sense if a corporation or a house hires a explorer, then this explorer could keep in touch and receive help from other explorers and report findings much faster than just going back and reporting in person. There are probably many research/scientific exploration/etc. orientated characters (I have two myself) but the faction in which they are in are different. I would not have my lawful corporation sponsored research facility work in a group with unlawful order scientists. One of the key concepts of modern scientific research is that of free flow of information, no matter what the political atmosphere (you may have heard of such things as the attempted boycott of nuclear technology to the middle east, which was rapidly shot down by the scientific community). The idea being that most research could very well benefit mankind as a whole (eg: cures for cancer, anti-viral medication, etc.). So, while governents may try to keep their research to themselves, scientists, being a stubborn lot, may even form some kind of shadowy organisation in order to share their knowledge... On another note, my Zoner destroyer has a scientific team on board, the head of which, having very conventional views on all this, would be quite interested in this idea. |
