reading Zapp's interpol thread made me think of something.

what if a rich corporation, maybe one ingame or a new one......there are a plethora of possibilities where the funding came from....formed their own small military? independant of the houses. what made me think of this is that i've been watching "Gundam 00" lately and the group known as "Celestial Being" are the main characters and are a private military group that intervenes in the affairs of others across the world in order to end war and conflict. anyway that's where i got the idea from.

for example, the AW and hellfire legion.....but without an NPC group to base themselves on.

would an independantly funded military be supported and/or welcomed? base your comments off of the group showing good RP in backstory, in-game, and on the forums?

i don't think they would necessarily be a Sirius Police, the military ID would fit best and it restricts the ships used....which fits nicely because they wouldn't have anything super big i'd imagine. i'm sure over time a specific political stance would develop for the group and that would govern their actions.

again...just an idea, no specifics on any of it.....just wanted to discuss it constructively

This is --ideally--the roles a true mercenary guild would fulfill. Instead of only "Two million to kill so-and-so" a true merc guild might be retained permanently to curtail excessive piracy and be paid regular payments for doing so--sort of like an attorney on retainer. The reason a guild instead of just a "clan" would be used is it would effectively need to be a real fleet in numbers and availability. A guild also would have to allow multiple faction involvement to some degree in order to be recognized Sirius-wide but would also have to have safeguards to assure people it was not using such connections to betray one client's secrets to another.

Just so happens I have created such a thing just haven't announced it yet. It has minimal rules and allows "membership" by any character or faction that is not terrorist a bounty hunter or house/house corporate authority. It isn't a "player faction" as it can't accommodate the restrictions for official faction creation here. It is an actual guild. (Like being in the Masons or having a AAA membership). Currently existing mercenary groups can be members and still maintain their autonomy and independence. No one is coerced to take missions or work with, for or against those their character/alignment wouldn't allow. Key thing that makes it work is profit sharing. I have a forum for the whole thing set up and was going to approach the Mandalorians first but if someone who has a mercenary or even a mercenary faction would like to respectfully explore the concept and consider working with it, PM me and I'll give you access to the website. Let me know in the PM who and what the characters are that are wanting to look into it. The site will explain the entire core concept and you can give opinions and feedback there if you wish.

That aside, you could play a "covert division" (or even a public one) but it is an awkward fit. Does IC operate its on military or retain mercs or bounty hunters? Most lawful corps would hire BHs for their work but many might desire mercs--particularly if they didn't trust BHs or couldn't handle the rep associated with working with them. Makes sense the largest insurance group might hire a force to police but it might also totally abstain from such things and work through negotiation instead and expect its shippers to maintain their own security. I would see the IC as like the Hogosha...working behind the scenes diplomatically and economically and politically.

Just my thoughts.

So, kinda like Blackwater but without the gov't throwing money at it, yeah Keb?

yeah similar to blackwater. the origin and politics of the group could be any number of possibilities....but they would definitely need a defined "point of view" in order to shape their RP and not just be a generic "Sirius police" a.k.a. "pvpwhore" faction.

i designed a similar group in the Mon'Star stories called Greys Gunners...kinda the same but what i think of with this one is a bit different. larger than just a band of ships but smaller than a full blown military.

This is something in which I would have an excessive amount of interest. A faction that was basically a "militia" for hire would fit well, diplomacy would get dicey, but it'd be fun as hell

Sorry I need to say it, even though you have mentioned it yourself. Sirius wide police force! *ufff* I feel a lot better now.

Well, basically there is nothing unrealistic about it, but I belive the attemps were already done and it ended... It simply ended and disappeared, or was terribly flamed.

The faction you are looking for may be, in some kind may be Agnus Dei, altough, they've also nearly disappeared.

Well, but you can try to describe the idea more, hell, you can even base it on Gundam, that will give you my full support on everything.

P.S. *points on signature, the man in front*

Here's the link to my proposal: Lictor's Guild

The site isn't prettied up but the facts are mostly there. If there is any interest, I'll be creating a "board of directors" and council to vote on Guild politics and the like just to enhance the role play--but that would follow after the basic operation being established and running.

Guns for hire, on a large scale and with more class than 'WE SHOOT JOO'.
Sounds good to me, where can I sign up?

On another note, for them to truely become a proper own military, they will need to use their own weaponry eventually. Establishing the group now and showing how good it can be is a step in the right direction.
