Lost track of time, saw the player loitering next to my ship in a separate system (player came to me, I did not head to the player), the character was RPing antagonistically, so I assumed PVP was their intention, I fired after precluding RP. Thought an hour had gone and when I checked after the fight (when the player who sent this off PM'd me about it), turned out to be 45 minutes. The ALG ship was a shared and I had no way of knowing if it was the same player or not. I was also a bit fudgy about the rules regarding if people come to you.
It happens. Ideally the death message would show a time-to-re-engagement so it'd be easy to screen and keep track of. The surrounding RP with Aux and then some Freelancers in the middle made me lose track of time.

Wanted to add that the fact it wasn't an intentional offence doesn't clear me from my screw-up. I'll be more careful next time. You're right about setting an example to others.

I've resolved it, no concerns. Just wanted to put it in the response so it was a bit more clearly signposted as a thing not to do.
