How in the hell.. Are you people targeting specific weapons? - Fozzie - 02-22-2009

I know it works I've had it done to me but I can never figure out how I'm supposed to type rp, fly my ship and somehow target specific weapons to strip the enemy. I've been playing this game for like 9 mo and I worked my way up flying combat missions in a viper so I fly ok. I'm still very lucky if I can even hit anyone during pvp, then it always seems like I pound away at them doing minimal damage untill they just nuke me with a few shots...I don't get it I think I'm missing some major aspect of this game. I'm basically avoiding pvp now because it just sucks to die every damn time I engage no matter who it is or what they're flying.
Even NPCs are a pain, I can attack using a Viper with lvl 8 armor and a 10 shield using 4 Solaris plus missiles and nuke mines(which just piss everyone else off) and a level 5 or 6 NPC takes many many hits to bring down. Engage a few nomads and no matter what I end up with 100+k worth of ship damage. Sometimes I'd swear somebody was playing tricks on me and nerfed my equipment. When I play my fighters and bombers I basically can't rp because I spend all my time dodging npcs or I just die over and over again and rping while docked to avoid dying or docking every 5 mins for bats, bots and missiles just blows.

I could use some advice here.

Bind 2 keys to sub target and while in combat choose your target, goto the detailed display of targetted ship and use your 2 keys to cycle up and down his ship systems.

PvP is annoying at times, some people can just dodge like a bat out of hell, not to mention I don't think the Viper series is the best at dodging. Some tactics can murder a Viper in 1 to 2 hits.

Nuke mines, DO NOT launch when the enemy is right behind you chasing you, he/she may be smart enough to cruise disrupt you which will very likely detonate the nuke mine, with you in the blast radius. A fighter and its weapons cannot take 2 or more of those in a row. Most die in just one blast.

Its easy to dodge a Viper in a light to heavy fighter, and lvl 5-6 NPC's tend to fly those. Sure once you get a good few his in quick, they die. They seemingly have infinite bots and bats. Don't let that bog you down.

What missiles to you use? Cannonballs? If so, swap them for Firestalkers, they work a treat for me against bombers in my Liberator.

You may want to lose those SOLARIS as well. They used to be good guns in 4.83, nowadays they're just a waste of space. There is a host of class 9 guns which are way better than them, provided they are within your RP alignment, of course. That or most (if not any) the lower refire rate codenames.

Your first solution is to have a go at trying to join the Colonial Remnant.:P

Also, Hammerfalls are the codename guns that work best on vipers, especially if chained.

Also, when jousting, dodge up and down( more effective than sideways with vipers, cause of their low profile).

And all will come with time.

If you have a class 10 VHF shield and mk 8 armor, it will take a very long time for you to die to a 2 debs/4 faction hullbusters fighter. Equally, it will take a similarly long time for you to kill them. The key to shortening a fight is to get to grips with all the weapons at your disposal. Missiles, mines and torpedo slot weapons can end a fight very fast if employed correctly.

To more specifically address the points you raise:

Component subtargeting. Look at the bottom left pane on your HUD (the contact list). Along the top are a series of icons. I think it's the 2nd from thr right is an image of a ship in a square. Click this icon while targeting something to switch to a wireframe image. From here, you can select individual components (guns, launchers, even thrusters and shields). This is only really useful when firing missiles...targeting someone's thruster then firing missiles into it can leave them crippled and an easy target.

Top level NPCs. These hurt any fighter-class ship badly, and, in some cases, can even hurt things up to cruiser size (BSes are practically invulnerable). My advice would be to either start RPing in "safer" zones (O-49, Gamma and places with Nomad patrols hurt most, while house space hurts least), or press tab before you press enter to type. this will leave you in thruster, and you can dodge with your mouse while typing.

CLARIFICATION...What I mean is in the time I spend trying to target anything specific I get killed immediately. Do you people all have an extra hand? Or 20 fingers?

Try what Spear said, or just...don't. 90% of the fights I get into, even if I'm using missiles, I don't bother with subtargeting.

Oh another tip, if you wish to RP, stay in cruise with your CM's set to auto fire, use mouse flight and just set it to the side so you are cruising round in circles. This gives you the chance to RP releativily safely.

Also if you afterburn and press chat button your afterburner is on automatic so u can do this in combat for quick comms.

Top tip is goto Conneticut and get some solid PVP practise in, dont shy away from fighting great pilots, you will learn invaluable tips from them.

EditL Lol no mate its not 20 fingers, it's practise. Keep fighting, it will all come in time.
