Vista being absolute fail. - bluntpencil2001 - 03-09-2009

Right, well, I followed DBoy's tutorial, but nae joy. Freelancer just won't work on my new laptop.

It crashes on launch. Without the mod, it mentions a Common.DLL, with the mod, this doesn't happen, but mentions a video card maybe not being good enough (it is, however).

Help plox.

I have had the same troubles in the past with my own vista laptop.

You must allow User Access Control (run program as admin) for the following programs everytime you use them:

Freelancer
Freelancer Account Manager
Freelancer Mod Manager

So to install, you run the programs in admin rights, which ensures all the files are allowed to be copied onto your default hard drive (C:).

Run Freelancer setup with admin rights and install the game.

Download Discovery mod.

Run FLMM with admin rights and activate discovery.

Run freelancer with admin rights to play.

If playing 4.85 beta, you must also run the DSUpdate.exe file (the exe with auto updater) with admin rights.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

To skip on right clicking on every program, you can right click on the program, click properties, click compatibility and check the box saying "Run as administrator". From now on, the program will run with admin rights after a prompt (Yes - no box).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If using AVG antivirus software on Vista, you must switch to another anti virus software. I personally use Avira, its free and works with vista. Good luck blunt!

Cheers, I'll try another fresh install. I think I used admin rights, but I'm not sure.

Also, User Access Control is a complete pain in the lower gluteal region. I highly recommend that you consider turning it off.

Otherwise - nothing personal, but it's not Vista, it's the User. If I can run Freelancer on Vista on this REALLY cheap Compaq laptop I bought last year (T2330 dual core Pentium processor running at 1.6 GHz, with 2 GB of RAM - and NOTHING special as far as video card is concerned - I bought it for use in insurance sales, actually, to run a specific program in clients homes, which is why it's so cheap) - then you can, too.

Oh, and I'm using Windows Live One Care on my home network, since I have that free for another 3 more years. (Gotta love free activation codes.) The FIRST time I had to tell it to allow Freelancer online. Since then - it's been perfect.

just one small question, is it ok if you keep using AVG but put freelancer into it's ignore list or do you have to change antivirussoftware?

As far as I'm aware you need to dump the software.

Right, so I can get the game working...

But alas, stopped at the final hurdle!
