Game micro-stuttering every couple of seconds - Jaffa - 12-31-2019

Greetings,

after a long break I've decided to jump back in Freelancer Discovery for a while, but shortly after login in I noticed this weird constant micro-stuttering every 1-2 seconds. This happends both in space as well as on planet screen.

I was looking about for a possible solution and found this, relatively recent post: https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=171455
which looked promising since I do have this issue of having to re-launch the game twice (with the prompt telling me to shut down the already running game), however after following described steps which should resolve this alleged performance issue, I found out that there is no secondary or highly CPU taxing rundll32.exe running that I could terminate.

My question is: is this "bug" that causes said micro-stutters still a thing, or is it possibly caused by a different Issue? I'm currently running the game on W7 and have seen people saying that upgrading to W10 fixes this issue (which I will have to eventually do anyways).

Cheers!

Hi, Jaffa,

I have the same problem like you on Windows 10, micro stutter for 1-2 seconds while in multiplayer (everytime when new ships appear or new stations are loading on the screen) . You can try changing your nvidia settings for the game for best/high performance instead high quality (if you have Nvidia). This may solve the issue for you. Please check also the attached png file.

Someone suggested https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download.html - RTSS for keeping your FPS up.

FPS sudden drop could cause the stutter. I still have no idea how to fix the stutter too.

it might have to do something with rundll32.exe but the one you need to disable is marked with 32-bit compat, rundll32.exe*32, just turn them all down with a task manager after you see the main FL menu screen

additionally, if your FPS drops happen when things spawn, say a ship undocking or NPCs appearing in a distance, it's alright because it happens to me aswell

I tried changing the nvidia settings, but unfortunately that didn't help. Regarding the rundll32.exe*32, when I launch FL where is only one running, and when I close it, it crashes the game.
I can't be too sure, but if I was to guess I'd say that these micro-stutters started to happen after i upgraded to GeForce GTX 1080.

i get choppy framerate in windowed mode sometimes, and it translates to fullscreen when i alt+enter the first time

starting windowed, i alt+enter to Full, Alt+enter to windowed, and Alt+enter to full again, and any sort of framerate/jitter problems are gone.

Why? I have not the slightest clue, but it could work for you

I was losing my mind over similar issues a few years ago - make sure you disable any in-game overlays that might appear (Steam, Discord, GeForce Experience, etc) and see if that works if the solutions above don't.

What framerate are you running the game on, it sounds like screen tearing.

You might try tinkering with your MTU settings:

https://myrandomtechblog.com/cryptomining/change-mtu-size-in-windows-10/

The logic is that, if the game packets are fragmenting, the game play will stutter. Windows 10 is usually pretty good about automatic settings, but it can go sidewise.

You can get more information by searching for:

What's currently the best way to show FPS in Freelancer? I'm not really sure I've ever done that.

If you're running on NVidia GPU, Shadowplay does a good job at doing it. You can also try Dxtory

if your game crashes when you try to close rundll32.exe, turn it to windowed mode (Alt+Enter) as soon as you see the main menu screen, then switch to a task manager, turn off rundll32.exe and switch back to a game. game crashes are happening to me aswell and it's a part of shadowplay being goofy with some games.
