The Liberty Free Republic (LFR) is an unrecognized breakaway polity based in the Ontario system, with its provisional capital on Fort Ramsey, furthermore it claims to represent the legitimate will of Liberty's working-class population. Conceived some time in 770 AS by secessionist elements within the Xeno movement, the LFR has established de facto control over the Ontario system, asserting political independence from the Libertonian federal government on Manhattan.

The movement’s stated objective is the creation of a sovereign, industrially self-sufficient worker-state — free from foreign influence, corporate exploitation, and centralized government control. The LFR is widely ignored by Liberty military authorities who see the Xenos as mere terrorists, but internally presents itself as a populist republic in the early stages of national formation.

Though not recognized by any major House government or even frontier states, the LFR nonetheless strives to embody the will of Liberty's disenfranchised industrial and military classes, with a political philosophy rooted in native worker sovereignty, anti-corporate resistance, and territorial self-rule.

The LFR is heavily influenced by the longstanding Xeno movement, but distinguishes itself through its organized militias, semi-formal governance structure, and explicit claim to territorial independence. Its military operations are most notably conducted by the Xeno Alliance, a well-regulated militia force.

The Toronto Massacre and Worker Defection (824 A.S.)

A defining moment in the LFR’s foundation occurred in 824 A.S. during the Toronto Massacre. Civil unrest aboard Toronto Station, sparked by DSE labor protests over dangerous working conditions and contract disputes, escalated into open violence when Liberty Marines responded with lethal force.

Surviving rebel workers fled into the Georgian Ice Field and were granted asylum at Fort Ramsey. Their arrival transformed Ramsey from a militant outpost into a burgeoning political community. The engineers and technicians from Toronto brought with them technical expertise, industrial knowledge, and a deep-seated resentment toward Liberty’s corporate system.

Working alongside Ramsey’s militia cadre, they expanded the base’s infrastructure, overhauled its machinery, and laid the groundwork for a larger industrial footprint within the system.

Post-War Militarization and Ideological Shift

Following the conclusion of the Gallic War, a second wave of recruitment reached Ramsey — this time composed of disillusioned Liberty Navy personnel. These veterans, having returned from the frontlines to poor pay, few prospects, or even perfunctory discharge, began defecting in small but impactful numbers.

Their presence introduced a layer of professionalism and hierarchy to the previously clan-based culture of Ramsey. Drawing on naval command structures and strategic doctrine, these defectors helped reshape the Xeno militia of the Fort into a more centralized and disciplined force. Lessons learned from Leeds and the worst hours of the Gallic war were quickly leveraged to teach an emerging generation of pilots and marines.

This evolving identity began to clash with traditionalist Xeno factions, especially those in Barrow and Ouray, who viewed Ramsey’s authoritarian discipline and territorial ambition as a betrayal of the older isolationist ethos.

The Battle for Ontario

835 A.S marked the most significant moment for the LFR to date. Following a major conflict over Site Alpha on the surface of Sudbury, an alien structure of interest to the Liberty Security Force (LSF). After the departure of the LNS Tuscaloosa, LFR forces launched a large-scale assault on an LSF expeditionary team guarding the heart of logistics into the system - the Robert Peary, defensive emplacements surrounding the California jump-gate, and the LNS Lehigh.

The resulting battle saw the LFR deploy an obsolete but heavily modified battleship known as the FRS Liberty Rose, supported by waves of militia-grade fighters. In a surprise engagement, they managed to significantly damage the LNS Lehigh and destroy the Robert S. Peary, Liberty’s only gate repair vessel.

This has led to serious complications in the stability of the California Jump Gate, and sparked political fallout within Liberty. For the LFR, the operation was a major symbolic and strategic victory — though achieved at staggering cost in personnel and materiel.

Ideology and Identity

The LFR positions itself as a worker-led republic seeking to reclaim Liberty’s economic and territorial autonomy. It opposes outsourcing, corporate ownership of critical infrastructure, and the dominance of Manhattan’s ruling aristocrats.

Key ideological pillars include:

Protectionism – Prioritizing Liberty-born workers and industries
Territorial Secession – Claiming the right, through force of arms, to be free of House Liberty
Armed Sovereignty – Maintaining freedom through a permanently mobilized, citizen-aligned militia committed to keeping the tyranny of Great House rule at bay
Labor-Led Governance – Rule by engineers, foremen, and veterans rather than career politicians backed by corporate sponsors

Fort Ramsey Today

Fort Ramsey serves as both the military and administrative heart of the LFR, albeit provisionally. Located within the Georgian Ice Field, the base is heavily fortified and serves as the primary training, manufacturing, and logistical node for all LFR operations.

It also functions as the seat of the Free Council, a semi-representative governing body composed of clan leaders, union delegates, and senior militia officers. While the council nominally sets policy, actual control remains in the hands of the individual Xeno bases and is in no way dictated by the Council. Rather, it seeks to coordinate efforts on a broader scale and pool resources, thus achieving objectives which would otherwise remain entirely out of reach.

The Xeno Alliance

The Xeno Alliance is an official force of the Liberty Free Republic. Distinct from other, more decentralized Xeno cells and squadrons, the Alliance is a well-regulated militia, operating under formal command hierarchy and maintaining allegiance to the LFR's provisional government now located on Fort Ramsey.

The Alliance is responsible for:

Territorial defense of LFR holdings in the Ontario system
Raiding operations against Liberty Armed Forces, Ageira, DSE, Planetform, and foreign corporate convoys across House Liberty
Enforcing LFR policy across loosely aligned frontier systems
Providing military aid to sympathetic Xeno groups or non-house aligned factions in other systems when requested

Unlike older Xeno groups, the Alliance is characterized by strategic cohesion, joint operations capability, and the integration of unique military doctrine.

Looking Ahead

The future of the LFR and its promises to the workingmen of House Liberty are thoroughly uncertain, especially following the implosion of the Commonwealth and the Vespucci Insurgency. But it seems like House Liberty will continue to be marred by ice, steel, and revolt.

The Liberty Free Republic Militia (LFRM):

At some point along the period of increasing dissidence focused around the systems of Hudson and Bering, Alliance leadership seemed to push quite heavily in the direction of recruitment efforts for a militia that could hold onto the territorial claims of the fledgling Republic. The formations of such groups are often herculean in terms of difficulty, with supplies being irregular and the cultures of its soldiers being extremely varied between brigades.

Despite the humble working class backgrounds from which the militia draws most of its support from, marines of the LFRM undergo rigorous training, competent officers and expert advisors ensure that the final product is a well drilled and disciplined soldier, rather than a dissident with a gun. The Alliance therefore adequately represents its ambitions to be more than mere criminals and rebels through the formation of such a body, and by being prepared to wrestle with all the encumbrances of statehood. There is more than its fair share of controversy from external entities claiming outsider involvement, given the highly uncharacteristic nature of professionalism and commitment represented by these men and women, however the Alliance seems to dispute this vehemently, alongside its disputes with the sector at large. Every brigade is further attached to a wing of fighter pilots within the Alliance, both to diversify strike capabilities and also to ensure cooperation between branches.

1st Brigade ("Knights of the Lonestar")

Specialties: Entrenchment and counter-offensives.
Brief history and description: The first of those to depart Camp Gore and declared with the hard earned status of being trained soldiers. By virtue of being the first among many to come, the brigade occupies an auspicious position, widely hailed as the most refined exemplification of Free Republic values. They are soldiers first and foremost, intended to turn a tide and then carry it. The people responsible for the brigade's training and selections were likely military officers of great pedigree, as cultures of honor and loyalty pervade the ranks of every battalion and company. Dutiful, and with ornate pauldrons and helmets to denote officers and various accolades, they are a prestigious entity among the LFRM's rank and file.
2nd Brigade ("Torchbearers")

Specialties: Shock and awe.
Brief history and description: Dour and reclusive, the second brigade is a mirror image of its preceding counterpart. Their entire modus operandi revolves around breaking opposition without hesitation and being extremely thorough. There exists a tradition to offer the enemy only one chance to surrender prior to any engagement, following which there are no terms and there will be no quarter given. Their weapons are crude and savage, their armor dull and without any distinction between the soldiers beyond what is absolutely necessary. They see their every deployment as a failure, for the LFR must have surely failed and become desperate enough to need men of their nature. As a rule of thumb, the first and second are never deployed together, as they would fundamentally undermine each other's methods.
8th Brigade ("Atkan Rangers")

Strength: 1,300 men and women.
Specialties: Environmental specialists.
Brief history and description: Arguably Camp Gore's most resilient breed of soldiers, their reputation for self sufficiency rivalled only by their skill as marksmen and snipers. Some confusion exists as to why the Camp's second brigade was dubbed the eighth, but the convenient jump in the numbers is a ploy to delude enemies into thinking that the Free Republic Militia is more numerous than it actually is. Within their ranks exists a culture of trophy collecting, whenever a target is put down, the soldier responsible usually keeps a memento of their first kill. With their operational flexibility and ability to evade ambushes, personnel from the brigade see frequent deployment to Atka as forward reconnaissance units. No doubt reminding Planetform who the world truly belongs to.
