This thought just passed through my head:

What if engines were destructible, just like thrusters. What would happen? Be an interesting concept to have a trader, or even a battleship "dead in the water". I'd imagine that the engines would be repairable through bots, or would automatically fly when attached to a friendly formation. I know it would be one more thing to worry about durring combat... but it would make it exciting.

No.
No. (Don't know realy).

Why bad idea? The dev team would have to make seperate engine commodities, just like shields and thrusters. The concept is good, but I don't think it's very FL-y. Mostly when the engine go's, the ship go's. Starlancer had it, though.

Great idea, they must be made tough though. Otherwise in a fight everyone would be immobalised, with one person flying around SNACing everyone.

single way how to do it without changing of doesns hardcoded things in game sourcecode (which isnt free) is swich speeds between thruster and standard engines and use thruster like primary engine

so yes it can be done (but result is badly impractical)

no, its not good idea

Technically you do have an engine hardpoint, at least for the engine effects. The question would be can you give it hitpoints (probably yes) but more than that, you need to know if the game actually cares whether or not you have an engine installed. I think it does (educated guess from an IFSO error message) but it might just look at the listed speed in the ship file.

So, is it doable? Probably.

Is it a good idea? Now that's another question entirely.

Destructible Engines - Doom - 03-17-2009

engines dont have a model....and they dont have a hit box...so what you cant hit you cant destroy...
however, you cant really destroy engine on any ship even if you could...you could for example disable it...but not probably destroy it...most of engine is inside the ship if you think about it...

Yes, and I believe FL ships use fusion engines (believe I saw it at the H-fuel or engine components infocard), if you damage them enough, the whole ship goes boom.

Destructible Engines - Xing - 03-17-2009

its funny... I remember one of the dev mentionning the idea not long ago.
no its not quite possible im afraid.

And Doom, you can actually destroy the engine. You can set it to destructible.

It will merely cause the game to crash if you blow it up. anyway thats what I understood of it.

Destructible Engines - Doom - 03-17-2009

i know about setting destructible or not...but how can you destroy something that you can't hit..? engine is just an effect that player sees, and few lines of code that defines how long it takes to get to cruise, type of engine etc...

also fuses that destroy whole ship if engine COMPONENT is destroyed is not used on non vanilla ships since they dont use components so that way is also out of the question...

there was few discussions one dev forums and some ideas how to make workaround that...but so far they are only discussions

I'm not sure if it'd be a good thing or not, but it seems it would be an interesting one! More fun would be if the mechanism that controlled cruise engines could be destroyed - is it possible to have cruise disabled?
