We've got tons of these things lying around, but other than looking pretty and being the subject of postponed mining operations, they're not doing anything. Perhaps one or two gas giants could be settled with floating stations by the GMG, seeing as they'd be best-equipped to do so.

If it's not possible, perhaps a gas giant with a liquid core, with a station like the one on Planet Kurile.

Thoughts, ideas...?

I think it's a very good idea. Like, planet Bespin in Star Wars? That would be really nice!

Exactly the concept.

I always seem to have random ideas when I wake up. Today it was a useful one.

i have seen ( in the freeworlds mod ) that they had created custom "stations" - not the space stations - but custom sceneries for landing on planets....

maybe that could be done for a floating platform / city on a gas giant.

on a more scientific note.... aren t gas giants rather hot like stars or at least have such a high mass that they would crush you before you got to the real "surface"?

Perhaps their are less pressurized ones? And the station idea was to have the ship inside (or partially inside) the landing station so the pilot doesn't get compressed.

And realism doesn't matter, seeing as planets are 5k in diameter and you can ram a star with the proper amount of armor and regens.

The Kurile-like station at a liquid core is not feasible, as the atmospheric pressure at the surface of a Gas Giant would be crushing.

A Bespin-like facility would be interesting if it is indeed worth the developers' time!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought that...

Anyway, we'd need to bring in some custom planet scenery to do so, wouldn't we? Do we have anyone who knows how to do that? But, then again, Jynx might be right, but, has physics ever stopped Freelancer before? :P

you obviously cant land on the surface (if there is any, I'm not that good in sci fi) of a gas giant, but, you could certainly wander its upper atmosphere I guess.

we d have to ask the freeworlds devs how they modelled the sceneries. - if it can be modelled, then - we we can do it.

but they also made custom cockpits - something we haven t really figured out here yet.

Damn, I want to land on cloud city
