Ok ive been reading Kurosora's topic on dock able gas giants and it made me think. Can we have multiple docking rings on major planets like manhatt or NB. As far as I know you dont need a planet to build a docking ring. (Ive tried it, its really funny seing your ship going through a ring and then go through that cinematic landing on a planet sequence :)) So, I was wondering, could this be done?

I just thought of another idea. Could we have dockable Outcast and Corsair BS's. It would really cool to have a couple in their guard systems.

Any thoughts, ideas?

There is a dockable Outcast Dreadnaught in Omicron-85, the Outcast Guard system.

From the Liberty Backstory developer document:

Quote:120 A.S.
Valhalla Research introduces their newest technological wonder, incorporating recently discovered superstrong crystalline polymers and frictionless bearings; when connected to orbital docking rings, these materials can be used to create "elevators" that almost completely negate the cost of boosting men or materials out of a planetary gravity well. Exploration and industry are revolutionzed almost overnight, opening up the entire New York system for commercial exploitation. Valhalla licenses the technology to the other houses, reaping huge returns in the process.

Valhalla Research got renamed to Ageira late in production (game files abbreviate Ageira as "vr"), and not all of the stuff in the document is necessarily canon. But this bit still makes sense, and when you think about how much combat potential you would have to sacrifice on a space superiority fighter to get it to be able to shuttle back and forth, there's no reason to assume anything different.

So, no, you really can't build a docking ring without a planet. In game engine terms you can, but in RP people would stare at you funny and suggest bad things about your parentage. Speaking of such, a docking ring wouldn't work with a gas giant in the traditional sense because you'd need something crazy heavy to moor it to. Normally the "crazy heavy" thing is the planet but that doesn't work for gas giants, so... docking ring attached to a "cloud city" might work, if everyone is prepared to get lurched around whenever someone docks. I'd suggest just having a station inside the atmosphere that can be docked with the conventional way.

As for multiple docking rings on a single planet, that's just more work for the port authorities. Ostensibly the facilities are scaled for the traffic they receive and we don't need to show the other 30,000 other docking rings a place like Manhattan may or may not have.

As for dockable OC and Sair battleships, there are a few Corsair dockable Osiris battleships, and there is the aforementioned dockable Outcast battleship in Omicron 85.

Ooh! I just had the perfect idea for a "dockable" gas planet!

Put a small version of the model of a neutron star inside of a 5k diameter (Meaning 2.5k from the middle of the cloud to the edge) gas cloud, and then build a station that wraps around the planet (something that would look like "the ring" in New Berlin.)

The neutron star inside the gas cloud would be the planet's "solid core," while the gas cloud would be a mine-able atmosphere containing the commodities required for H-fuel! I'm genius!

Now all we need is what the gas giant looks like from the station.

there are already planets that have multiple docking rings in disco, the planet in champagne has 2 docking rings

Moor it to another docking ring on the other side of the planet. Just don't tell anyone.

They'll dock and get spat out the other end, all confused.

Hell for what its worth, we could probably just stick a docking ring in the middle of nowhere and it would probably work.

Double Docking Rings. - Xing - 04-12-2009

what we need is in planet scene..

Docking rings are just like stations, just with different animations.

Planets are irrelevant, as is everything else.

Docking rings and docking bays ARE the bases.
Everything else is fluff.
Pretty fluff.

So yes, you can have 100 docking rings but here's a whopping question for ya.
Why?
