i've tried re-installing both freelancer and flmm making sure i deleted the old files from the hard drive, and still, it won't activate. what am i doing wrong?

This has only ever happened to me once.
1. Are you using FLMM 1.3?
2. Try going to Tools then Restore Backups. That worked for me when some weird error message came up after I tried to activate it.
Also, go to DSupdate after you have installed the mod.

Go to the freelancer folder, open EXE then doubleclick on DSupdate.exe

Give us more details than "it won't activate".
What is your OS (Windows version)? How exactly are you doing it? What does it say when it fails?

this is what the lig says when it doesn't activate:
Error: FLMM has determined that 'Discovery Mod v4.84' won't properly activate.
Error: Unable to find section '[Costume]'(...) in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\data\characters\costumes.ini'

You are activating an old mod version, although that alone shouldn't cause the problem. Get the newest mod version from this link:
