"Abandoned" Bases - Cellulanus - 05-08-2009 So I was thinking, remember how in SP you had some more or less abandoned stations that you would use for cover? Well I was thinking that we could possibly scatter similar bases across of the sector, neutral bases that have no NPCs in them, save for possibly a robot equipment dealer and either wouldn't sell anything or would only sell basics like B/Bs and ammo. They could range from abandoned research facility's, old mining outposts, old war time staging stations and others. They would certainly be useful for atypical factions as places to work from, and they should be easy to code due to the fact that there really isn't much to them. So, good idea or bad idea? Personally I don't think they're necessary, because it's not like you're ever that far from the next friendly base. It might be viable in edge/border worlds, but not house systems. The thing is, I could see player factions 'claiming' these bases and causing trouble. and since there are no NPC's it wouldn't be OORP to base camp. The other thing is, all you could do is dock there. As it is abandoned you shouldnt be able to buy or sell anything, equipment included. You shouldnt even be able to get repairs really... The other issue is if these bases are truly abandoned, who's maintaining them? I mean bases just wont remain operational forever without maintenance. Thought of one more thing too. Stations cost a lot of money. Someone would half to have a pretty good reason for abandoning them, and an even better reason for not scrapping them to re-coup loses. Also why wouldnt some faction set up shop on one of these bases as soon as they found it? Yeah, gonna have to vote no, sorry. I see no problem with player factions claiming these stations, no one really owns them in the first place anyways. 2. Sure, why not? 3. It depends, on the one base in Omega 3 it appears to have been abandoned for a few months, and some one left a robot behind that could help maintain the thing so I'd say that FL stations are at least reasonably robust and automated, that and some of the people the frequent them as hide outs might be inclined to patch things here and there. 4. Well, considering that there are dozens of old supply depots and other assorted mining gear scattered across the sector, I'd assume they are built pretty solid and that its more cost efficient to simply abandon the stuff then try to scap it. Also as for abandoning stations, mining stations would be abandoned when the upkeep cost outweighed the profit, aka when the field runs out of supply's, research stations whenever it turns out that they have no more use for them and old war staging stations would be abandoned when either the war was over, they were over run or simply stopped helping the war effort. 5. There are numerous potential reasons, perhaps the station doesn't really have the ambiances or space required to really be useful, the faction doesn't have the numbers to man the base or its just not in a place where the faction would find it useful. Tazuras mentioned some facts already: Who maintains those bases? Or do you have to bring things like fuel or repair materials yourself there to get it running? Who sells stuff there? I think nobody should sell anything there, as those bases are abandoned. "Abandoned" Bases - sean24 - 05-08-2009 I like it. Although I think the bases should be shown as being under Freelancer controll, this is so that at least someone can take authoritie over them. I think that they would be handy, especialy between long distances in space. "Abandoned" Bases - tazuras - 05-08-2009 In response to Johann Brunhild Alright, I'll buy most of that. Two things that still dont quite fit though. Eventually the robots will run out of parts to maintain themselves. Also, why were they robots left behind? Wouldnt the original owner of the base have a better use for them elsewhere. The other thing is even if the station were abandoned and the maintenance bots left behind, why wasnt it looted? Why didnt someone scrap the station, either to sell the parts or use them on their own stations? EDIT: I could go for under freelancer control. |
