Pierce.

Ship's holding well enough, for an older design. A few minor technical issues, largely switches and color choices, but nothing to impact performance. Leftenant Harmon has assured me he'll look into it during the night shift while everyone's catching some shut-eye.

A substantial pause is interrupted by a short sigh.

There's a lot out here we don't know; y'know, the reports only say so much. We'll be catching a fairly up-front glimpse of it when we break past the Omega border, way they say. Some of the crew came from Liberty, and some same as me and the XO. Killing squiddies is a different kind of shock to seeing your own dead. Certainly hits different, that's for sure.

Got hope, though. Always got bloody hope. *chuckle* Not expecting Her Majesties' lads to hear without seeing, but we'll certainly try to keep them informed out here. Won't be easy, of course, but easy isn't the why of it.

Another, more prolonged pause, a small tap of what sounds like a pencil against a desk, following by a sharp inhale.

I've got good hopes for this, though. Becker'd thwap me for this, but I'm gonna make the old lady proud out here.
Just you watch, Patty.

A swift click finishes the audio log.

Log: 0829834.0922
Type: Mission

Subject: Update 1 - South Core/Outer Bretonia

Reporting,

Ubaste began regional scouting earlier in the week. Traversal of Magellan, Cortez, Coronado revealed much remnant debris from Gallic invasion, as well as considerable House ignorance of border regions. House connection of Crayterian Republic to trade lane network confirmed, providing additional route to monitor.

Rheinland Buro[1] logistics vessel was sighted in Coronado, gave order to disregard given operational parameters.
Ubaste transited to Newcastle system, given clearance to begin survey of Craster Nebula under low risk. Unknown signatures detected within south region of charted expanses, noted and stored for future investigation. Approach of central nebulaeic zone revealed substantial Nomad architecture[2], visual confirmation made upon closer fly-by[3]. Ubaste reported active shielding[4], similar to intra-Dyson colony, though deactivated weaponry suggests Nomad hive remains dormant.
Evidence of Bretonian investigation was detected before Ubaste was forced to withdraw.

Ubaste performed exfiltration via Leeds-Magellan wormhole to relink with Apollo.

Strategic;
Buro interest in Independent Worlds unknown. Suspect 'logistics' to be cover for other means. Recommend further observation to discern motives.

Nomad infrastructure within Newcastle raises concerns regarding Bretonian security. Unknown Bretonian investigation duration, recommend routine observation of region, tabs on convoys to and from research site.

Personal;
The Buro as of now has not been sighted using vessels like the one we encountered. My suspicion is potential artifact recovery, but this is a fringe thought at best. We'll continue to monitor to see if we find anything further.

The Nomad City has the crews concerned, especially aboard Ubaste. Tilson noted light mental whispers among both himself and some members of his crew. Tests were run via standard protocol, with zero erroneous readings. I've ordered affected crew of Ubaste to cycle with Apollo crew to keep field team stable, as well as provide a safe atmosphere for those cycled out.
I've elected to keep Tilson in his position for the time being, although I am prepared to cycle him out should command deem it necessary.

Log: 0904834.0851
Type: Mission
Asset: Apollo - Pierce
Subject: Update 2 - North Liberty: Ontario

Reporting,

Apollo has established security zone within Cortez star system. Position noted as non-ideal, will be preparing for departure to potential zones within Coronado or Baffin within the week.

Ubaste performed another scouting flight, transiting Manchester>Newcastle>Coronado, making diversion through Inverness on full burn to avoid Technocrat incident, departing to Ontario.
Arrival was met with immediate local conflict[1], zero fire directed at Ubaste. Authorization was granted for full system scan, priority for high safety. No incidents recorded.

Huron orbit populated by numerous station wrecks, modular and permanent. Recon flight of deteriorated Ontario->Alberta Gate[2] connection confirms continued deactivated status. Ontario->Alberta Jump[3] anomaly also registered as unsuitable for traversal.

Approach of Planet Sudbury revealed destroyed Technocrat liner[4], as well as local conflict, likely involving the aforementioned. Few scans made, although readings do not indicate any level of life aboard, and potential data either scrubbed before loss or irretrievable.
Ubaste continued to Sudbury orbit, with Captain Tilson reporting unnatural signals before reaching far side. Traversal to far side[5] then revealed shielded region on planetary surface. Ubaste XO noted similarities to Heaven's Gate energy shielding[6], powered by Nomad generators. Potential for similar energy readings, although without proper scanning equipment. Visual readings note similar fluctuations, and structure of some sort located at shield center.

Ubaste finalized scans and performed exiltration via California system to Cortez.

Strategic;
Ontario remains backwater. Higher than average LSF presence indicates potential interest within system. Unconfirmed reports of LSF battlecruiser stationed within system support this.
Alberta corridor remains sealed, and local infrastructure in ruins. Irrelevant on matters of containment, although still of note for command.

Sudbury anomaly raises concerns of local security. Energy shielding not phased by main battery discharge, hinting at potential subterranean complex or power source. Unclear whether active Nomad site, dormant, or vacant Daam K'Vosh ruin.
Ubaste will be deployed again soon to conduct proper scanning operations.

Personal;
The system itself is isolated. This provides both pros and cons; Pros, Ubaste can operate system-wide without much opposition. Cons, an outbreak here would not be easy to detect. We were not able to confirm any Nomad sightings within the system, but an anomaly like this is bound to attract attention.

Alongside this report, I am submitting a formal request for tactical readouts of Heaven's Gate, circa 801 A.S.. Thank you.

Reporting,

Ubaste reports alien activity within Ontario system, spillage into Inverness. Negative warform elimination, retreated within uncharted structure[1], non-hostile casualties prevented. Potential hive discovery[2], location unknown, within Inverness heliosphere. Ubaste reports no substantial damage sustained.

Strategic;
Recommend thorough analysis of East Avlemore Nebula when possible. Technocrat presence forced Ubaste withdrawal before Naval exfil. Potential to inform Technocrats of local alien hive, decision left to Command.

Personal;
Captain Tilson proved himself and his crew quite able, and I'm pleased to report the Navy knew who was the enemy here. Dreadnought LNS Shenandoah's captain provided Ubaste transit of Ontario anomaly[3] upon detection of incoming Technocrat vessels; I anticipate making contact to both offer thanks, as well as potential cooperation on Nomad activity within Ontario and surrounding systems.

Log: 0920834.0719
Type: Mission
Asset: Apollo - Pierce
Subject: Bulk Report - 16SEP834 / 18SEP834

Reporting,

Bulk report, two instances.

First, Apollo commenced undock from Barrier Gate into congregation of pilots, local and exotic. Scanners detected alien target at range, apparently engaged with one of the pilots, who removed the threat. Pilot returned to Barrier Gate, commencing landing before proper inquiry could be made. Attempt at inquiry was made with remaining populace, consisting of the following ship identifiers:

> Tracey.Rivers - Freelancer, Unaffiliated
> Moreya - Freelancer, Unaffiliated, self-identified as 'Dr. Rhea Novak'
> Bessie-"Bison"-Bishop' - Bounty Hunter, Departed Early into Inquiry
> [MFE]-Hans.von.Goeben - MedForce Enterprises
> Amy.Foulke - Freelancer, Unaffiliated, Joined mid-Inquiry
> Emacs.Enjoyer - Lane Hacker

Details of interaction with alien target indicate it never closed within range of the station. The pilot that removed it, callsign 'Caliban', has a noted history of combat involving alien entities, including the one encountered. Amid inquiry, pilot returned to Barrier Gate flying a secondary vessel, Valkyrie-class[1], sporting unknown equipment, questions regarding not pressed.
Caliban, also identified as a 'Mr. Abrams', identified other instances of contact with Nomad entities, including an earlier encounter with the entity from before within Tau-115 (Roussillon). Pilot noted entity as being a 'human before', deriving an apparent assumption that the entity he'd removed outside Barrier Gate was once an individual, name unknown, and has a past history with Revenant of Auxo.

Inquiry officially ended soon after, no further details of note.
Recommend further observation of 'Caliban'. Valkyrie-class vessel of particular concern.

Finally, expect potential of Ubaste deployed to support MedForce supply shipment to Freeport 10, for Admiralty to take note of.

Second, Ubaste deployed from Ontario to Leeds to conduct quick scan-run of lower Taus. Traversal of Edinburgh indicated considerable debris[2] from regional activity in-line with destruction of Royal Enclave. Bretonian presence confirmed[3] within system, although effort to retrieve material of unknown completion. Bretonia of likely need for readiness effort, although uncertain of willingness to receive.

Traversal of Tau-31 confirmed Bretonian foothold near Planet Harris, unknown regional strength. Local Crayterian garrison presence unknown.

Arrival in Coronado for transfer of material to Apollo resulted in further contact with Lane Hacker pilots, callsigns Oberth.Effect, );-Maxcap, and );-BadPing. Reception of our mission here was positive; Pilot Maxcap provided link to NNmail address, and assurance to provide relevant information upon discovery.
Ubaste departed Barrier Gate with good speed, performing minimal traversal of Inverness en-route to Ontario.

No hostilities reported.

Strategic;
Pilot 'Caliban' of particular interest. Unknown weaponry and demeanor subject to scrutiny; Self-reported history with Overwatch, recommend ping to secure information regarding.
Local Nomad activity of probable concern, likely a route through Tau Corridor. Requesting clearance to ping Auxo regarding Inverness scanning access concerning potential local hive.

Coordination with local Lane Hacker cell of large interest, particularly with regard to Ubaste scanning suite. Potential for Hacker assistance in breaking Sudbury Anomaly shielding massive.
Will report on feasibility of Hacker assistance.

Personal;
This pilot we encountered near Barrier Gate concerns me quite a bit, particularly with regards to his choice of weaponry. Being a local, the other pilots we encountered appear to know him as being a bit of a maverick, which is unhelpful.
The Lane Hacker coordination, however, is exactly what we were looking for out here. My own personal quarrels aside, Hacker assistance in regards to nebulaeic scanner piercing will likely prove invaluable.

Log: 0927834.1939
Type: Mission
Asset: Apollo - Pierce
Subject: Special Report - 27SEP834

Reporting,

One topic of note this week. However, a quick report on activity with Inverness indicates that fighting within is slowing to a crawl. Unclear whether Liberty/Crayter force is winded or diverting to other theatres. Will provide further information regarding when available.

Conflicted reporting, following confirmed contact with Nomad lifeforms in Inverness. Special Operative Funai departed Freeport 14 into typical encounter with local residents, one claiming to have found non-hostile specimen within West Avlemore Nebula. Special Operative Funai deployed to investigate, encountering vessels of previously unknown identifier TFP), self-indicating strong ties to former Hellfire Legion, alongside forces of the Technocracy, and a confirmed Nomad specimen. Operative Funai seemingly chose non-violence, standing by and observing until specimen approached.

Nomad specimen indicated capability of Human-like speech, previously encountered in fringe instances, Entity maintained non-hostile stance, but was not specimen described by individual near Freeport 14. Such specimen soon revealed itself, taking position alongside smaller warform, quickly joining dialogue engagement. Vessel is noted as being of 'Bustard'-class design, likely of compromised origin, similar to other noted vessels in employ of Nomad entities. These specimen, however, indicated Human origin, including the smaller warform.

Primary specimen indicated 'hybridization' of tissues between Human and Nomad physiology, while secondary indicated transferal of consciousness into Nomad shell, feasibility and viability of such heavily questioned. Primary specimen also noted differentiation between process undergone and 'infestation', details of such requiring verification. Primary also noted former association with group known as Oracles, of which we have little information. At this time, Legion forces returned from removal of Crayterian asset and forced Special Operative Funai's withdrawal, as well as primary and secondary specimen. Operative Funai proceeded to Coronado via system anomaly, where continuation of interrogation commenced.

Special Operative Funai resumed communication with specimens, noting a separate mindshare from that of Nomads akin to those known as the Slomon K'Hara. This supposed separation resulted following actions within the Omicron Major Dyson Sphere, and the resulting hypergate activation, and drove division between their 'share' and that of the remaining Nomad populace in Sirius. Specimen indicated this separate mindshare's lack of interest in waging war against Humanity, a prospect to treat a heavy skepticism. Primary specimen then offered a video feed of the internals of the 'Bustard'-class vessel, recorded by Special Operative Funai, which will be attached to this report alongside Operative Funai's internal clearance chart.

Primary specimen's statements then turned to past events, detailing their apparent 'hybridization', a process it did not elaborate on. Potential was gained in learning of the uses for so far unclear 'liquid cardamine', used by primary specimen for sustainment of Nomad tissue. Whether this is true for all Nomads or those of modified origin was not described. Likely that such material is critical to Nomad physiology in some respect.

Primary then recounted the apparent schism between their 'share', which they call 'Song of the Abyss', and their estranged kin, which they call 'Song of the Light'. They detailed the latter's desire to absorb their 'share', and to wage a war against those not of their kind. They claim to fear much, including potential annihilation, and thus make efforts of 'diplomacy'. Primary specimen closed the encounter by offering itself for more in-depth interrogation.

Logs of the encounter will be attached to this report.

Strategic;
Encounter displays potential in understanding Nomad behavior, as well as reasoning for potential Nomad collaboration with Humans across Sirius. Validity of claims made by specimens unknown, yet fit somewhat into already existing models.
Further investigation into this matter will commence following command authorization.

Personal;
I'm at a loss.
On one hand, Special Operative Funai violated protocol, and subjected themselves to extreme potential risk. The loss of operatives to this kind of investigation is a clear and obvious danger, and one she understood well, yet carried on anyway.
On the other, her actions have provided tremendous insight into the inner functions of Nomad 'culture', as well as the extents to which our knowledge of the Nomads may be insufficient. There is still considerable investigation to be done in this regard, and current protocol will need to be relaxed somewhat to allow for it, but I am content with allowing Operative Funai to continue her investigation into this matter, especially if it helps to better understand Nomad behavior in the aim of removing them as a threat to Humanity.

Pierce.

I'm attaching Becker's response to this log, purely for my own organizational needs. I like my setup, and I'd hate to mix it up now.
In short, she's placing the burden of choice on me. Can't say I'm surprised, really. This is peak her.

I'm going to allow Rie to continue this train of investigation. Looking over that recording she made of the ship's feed.. it's otherworldly. We've never encountered anything like this, and yet I fear there is more than just this out there. If this is what's been going on out here, this.. strange metamorphosing, then it's our obligation to investigate, no?

Hopefully, Rie will make a good effort on this. A shame she fell into this, but I won't send anyone, even Gorobets, in her stead. She's been exposed, and I'm sure even she knows it.
I'll ask her to head out once again tomorrow, to see if she can make second contact. The one from the video feed said it would subject itself to questioning, which would be.. well, quite the shock, I suppose.
We'll need to make the necessary preparations, and to ensure the Overwatch, or anyone really, does not interject themselves into this.
I doubt they'll be anywhere near as allowing as Patty was.

Log: 1003834.2230
Type: Mission
Asset: Apollo - Pierce
Subject: After Action Report - 03OCT834

Reporting,

Operative Funai departed the Apollo en-route to Barrier Gate Station, to locate and further inspect potential actors in the area. Upon arrival, Funai was met with five pilots in range of the station, as well as evidence of a Nomad operating cloaked in the area as well. Operative Funai elected to inquire to local populace and observe for further activity.

A Liberty Navy patrol proceeded into the area, comprising of one pilot and an experimental battlecruiser, in an effort to locate the alien signal. Regional conversation ensued, and shortly following the Naval departure, Operative Funai was forced to depart Barrier Gate during regional sensor processing due to population agitation. Funai returned to Barrier Gate following sensor sweep of Sierra Vista and brief return to Apollo for refueling, detecting the previously encountered Nomad engaged with a local.

Following termination of the Nomad entity, pilot callsign 'Caliban' moved to engage Funai, sporting unknown weapons as previously reported. Funai was not capable of outperforming the freelancer, and was only allowed to leave following verbal backlash regarding orders pertaining to the Technocracy.
Said freelancer also stated they would provide us with potential information incriminating the Technocracy. This remains to be received.

Strategic;
Operative Funai did not perform to expectations, but was under considerable pressure. Analysis reports pilot callsign 'Caliban' to be dangerous, and potentially threatening to Legacy operations in the Independent Worlds. Further observation of the pilot in question, as well as their associates, will be conducted.

Personal;
Funai returned to the Apollo heavily damaged and emotionally distraught. I'm aware of how great a personal dishonor it is to be left alive by one's enemy, and I fear this may impact her field operations if not treated with the right level of care.
I will speak with Funai on my own time. Until then, and when I'm sure she's in a position to perform her duties without trouble, I'm grounding her to the Apollo.

Report filed.
