The Unforgiven Legion - Xeno Alliance - 01-20-2025 ![]() Unit Designation: The Unforgiven Legion
"You surrendered when surrender was your only option. You ask that we forgive you for dispassionate service to a regime that stifled our autonomy. Many of you might have even been active participants in depriving our people of their lives and liberties. So I say no, you are not forgiven. You haven't earned that grace, not yet. Not until you have paid back the years you stole from us."
- Alliance Commander Damien Morreti Overview:
The Unforgiven Legion represents one of the most unorthodox units within the Liberty Free Republic's military apparatus. Established as both a punitive measure and a last resort for skilled but disgraced Commonwealth defectors, the Legion operates under strict oversight and an unyielding code of conduct. The pilots who serve within its ranks have been marked as pariahs, their once-pristine records tarnished by their surrender to the Free Republic after the Fall of Vespucci. Despite their past, these men and women are given an opportunity to reclaim their dignity by enduring the most arduous and dangerous missions. Their existence is a testament to the LFR’s pragmatism: even traitors can serve a purpose, so long as they are willing to sacrifice everything to prove their loyalty anew. Composition: The Legion is a melting pot of talent and disgrace, composed of pilots who were once regarded as elite among the Commonwealth forces. These individuals bring unparalleled combat experience, tactical acumen, and technical proficiency to the table. Many of them were decorated officers, squad leaders, and aces before their surrender. However, their acts of capitulation or desertion stripped them of all rank and recognition, forcing them to start anew under the LFR’s terms. The harsh regimen of the Legion weeds out those unfit for service, ensuring only the most resilient and committed remain. What binds them together is not camaraderie but desperation—a drive to earn back what they lost and perhaps, in time, escape the shadow of their own failings. Equipment: Though considered a penal unit, the Legion’s access to Commonwealth legacy technology elevates them above most of the militia's squadrons. Their primary fighter, the Prosecutor series, is a versatile craft designed for both offensive and defensive operations. While it lacks some of the advancements found in other designs, its agility, modular weapons systems, robust frame, and ECM suite unique to the Legion's original manufacturing templates, make it a formidable tool in the hands of an experienced pilot. To provide a degree of fire support, a sizeable contingent of Inquisitor class gunboats are also attached to the unit. These veritable bricks serve as troop transports and combat craft, allowing the Legion to board and coordinate with other in-system elements to render effective fire support. Maintenance of Legion's equipment is strictly supervised, ensuring that even in the hands of the disgraced, these tools remain fully combat-ready. Mission Profile: The Unforgiven Legion is assigned to operations deemed too dangerous or resource-intensive for regular militia units. These missions often include frontline assaults against fortified enemy positions, deep-space reconnaissance in hostile territory, sabotage of critical enemy infrastructure, and retrieval of high-value assets. Due to their unique background and motivation, Legionnaires excel in situations requiring both expertise and an acceptance of high personal risk. Their success rate is a testament to their determination to prove themselves. However, failure is not an option—pilots who survive a botched mission often face extended sentences or reassignment to labor duty. Redemption?: The path to redemption within the Unforgiven Legion is grueling but not impossible. Pilots who distinguish themselves through acts of valor may earn commendations, which are reviewed periodically by Alliance leadership. Upon reaching a threshold of merit, a Legionnaire is offered the chance to undergo a rigorous reintegration process. This includes psychological evaluations, skill assessments, and interviews to determine their readiness to enter service as part of a new and "Free Legion". In rare cases, exceptional service has led to full pardons, allowing former Legionnaires to live as free citizens within the LFR. For most, however, exoneration remains an elusive goal, attainable only through years of sacrifice and unwavering dedication.
