The Prince of Valhalla - iiLeRoss - 03-08-2025 Low Atmosphere, New Berlin March 7th, 835 AS "Konteradmiral von Richter, you are hereby recalled to the Kolonnenplatz for an urgent meeting." Erich had read the rest of the communique in full but could find no hidden, or any, explanation or meaning for why this order had been given. Surely it would not be a political demotion, they had sent a courier to hand deliver the message, and they could humiliate him without dragging him back to the capital. The roar of approaching engines drew his attention to the viewports. Out of his shuttle, he could now see the glow of two pairs of Valkyrie, one on each flank, assuming escort. While his rank offered him some security measures, they typically did not go out of their way to dispatch an escort for an in-atmosphere flight. Possibilities stirred in his mind. Had another attempt on the Kaiser been made, a fresh plot by insurrectionists? Or was it something else? A faint chirp came from a speaker. "Konteradmiral, we're on final approach to the Kolonnenplatz", the voice echoed. The shadowing Valkyries began to peel away, and a new sight came to Erich's eyes. The Kolonnenplatz, the gothic, imposing headquarters of the Rheinwehr, was gradually encompassing his view. A building where the fate of Rheinland had been steered many a time, where the true power behind the Kaiser's throne stood. Power Erich himself helped move into place. "My destiny approaches", Erich mused to himself. As if on cue, the internal landing light switched on. An experienced spacer, Erich chose to forgo the usual strap-in, simply ignoring the light shudder of the shuttle halting. Another chirp and the same voice declared, "Konteradmiral, landing complete, you are clear to disembark". Standing up, Erich briskly walked toward the ramp and pushed the adjacent panel. A light hiss filled the air as the ramp worked its way down to the ground. Stepping out, Erich embraced the all-familiar sights. In the distance, the troops of the Wachbataillon, in perfect synchrony, marched across the parade ground that made up the main courtyard. Others stood sentinel in orderly dress uniform. Great monuments gazed down, inscriptions marking Rheinland's victories and defeats alike. But what caught his eye was a squad of troops, in full combat gear, escorting a lone officer creeping their way to the landing area. Focusing his gaze, he recognized the man at once. The aloof Chief of the Rheinwehr Personnel Office, Admiral Hans Kohl. This was going to be a very interesting day. |
