[Guide] Dual Install (To play Campaign with Discovery installed) - TheKusari - 04-25-2025

.
.NOTICE: This was posted on a whim, hoping the specific install details are accurate when I was trying to recall them. There may be parts I have forgotten or steps unaccounted for. In general the process is accurate and will help those wanting to play the story without too much fuss.

So you want to play the Campaign while you have Discovery installed? May be a problem when the mod wipes your save game every time it's launched. I'm afraid this guide will go over how to setup the dual install from scratch. If you're savvy enough, I'm sure you can duplicate an install and work with it. If not, well please follow along.

Create this folder structure in your games drive:
  • Freelancer
    • Discovery
      • Directory
      • Mod Files
      • Accounts
    • Vanilla
      • Directory
      • HD Edition
  • Install Freelancer into Freelancer > Vanilla > Directory
  • Copy contents of the "Directory" folder and paste into Freelancer > Discovery > Directory
  • Now you have separate installs for Vanilla and Discovery
  • Grab the installer for Discovery from Moddb
  • Install the Discovery Mod into Freelancer > Discovery > Mod Files
  • Grab the HD Edition for Freelancer
  • Install the HDE into Freelancer > Vanilla > HD Edition
  • Create shortcuts if necessary (I believe HDE and Discovery create their own upon install)

Benefit here is that HDE save games aren't wiped by Discovery, as they are kept in a different folder:
Documents > My Games > FreelancerHD (instead of "Freelancer", which Discovery wipes on launch)

Hope this helps!

just incase of any funnies regarding your keybind (cus its not just save games there), etc, you should always backup the Freelancer folder in My Documents/My Games/ and simply rename the Freelancer folder to Freelancer DiscoveryBackup and just rename it back to Freelancer when playing discovery, rename the Freelancer to Freelancer Vanilla Backup. swap names when playing whatever mod. etc.

It is worth mentioning here that you have to select custom install when installing the HDE version
and tell it to use the different save game folder. Express install uses the regular Freelancer save folder
which will still delete your save games.

There are also many other useful options there which make it worth looking at.
