Congregation Votes to Denounce Harris Treaty
LIPARI - The congregation aboard the capitol ship Barcelona closed late yesterday with a final vote on Proposition 36, a vote to recognize the Treaty of Harris, signed by the Crayter Republic, the Empire of Kusari, and the Kingdom of Bretonia following Kusari's invasion of Gallia several years ago, as a critical obstacle against peace and safety within the Tau Sector, passing the Congregation by a vote of 14-2. This followed a vote the hour prior regarding Proposition 35, itself recognizing Bretonia's seizure of the EFL-made jump gate linking Tau-23 to Tau-31 as unlawful, which passed the Congregation unanimously. Several representatives spoke at length today during the session regarding both propositions, many speaking out in favor of the intent behind the legislation, which is said to be in furtherance of the government's initiative to settle the 'Tau Question'.

When asked on her opinion of the outcome of the vote, Vice President Escher, who presided over the session, told Lipari Solar:
"It's definitely a step towards mending some of the chronic issues that plague this sector. The Harris Treaty is, by and large, drafted out of hate, fear, and prejudice. I don't believe each signatory holds the same weight of dedication to those values when it comes to outlook, but on the whole that is the reality. One of the provisions of the treaty is reparations, which we've seen throughout history, time and again, fail to bring closure to any issue. It happened on Ancient Earth, and it has happened here. The treaty stunts the region's growth and healing, and does nothing to counter the Outcast threat. That it also attempts to validate corporate warfare with regards to the jump gate in Tau-23 is very concerning. I can only hope that Mr. Bayner's efforts to replace the Harris Treaty with something more constructive, something mutual, makes headway from today's vote."

The passing of both propositions follows talks between the Republic and the Gallic Union, a critical power whose involvement the Iltzmann Administration sees as vital to the stability of the region. The Treaty of Harris, signed by the major Alliance powers following Kusari's invasion of Gallia, largely excludes the Union from all operations within the Tau systems without significant reprisal. While it is uncertain as to what response the Harris powers will have to this development, many see this as Lipari currying favor with the Union, likely as an effort to progress Foreign Secretary Bayner's Tau Initiative.

Response to the propositions were somewhat positive prior to Congregational voting, with many within the city of Lipari itself hopeful for the Administration's efforts to cull active fighting within the region. Others have been more scathing, such as Representative Eliza Franelli (LC-06), who called it "a wall on the beltway, and an unnecessary hurdle to [Secretary Bayner's] efforts." Franelli was one of only two no votes for Proposition 36, alongside Representative Simon Gates (LC-08), and spoke at length regarding her position against the measure, calling it "tantamount to denunciation." It is important to note both Ms. Franelli and Mr. Gates voted in favor of Proposition 35 only an hour before.

Both propositions will now be sent on to the President for final signoff, which is expected to happen tomorrow without delay. Lipari Solar will continue coverage of this matter when more details are available.

Those not-so-much Outcasts seem quite reasonable. I think we will be hearing good news about you soon.
