Galileo on the brink |
GALILEO - For the last four years, Deep Space Engineering, Kishiro Technologies and Samura Industries have been embroiled in a fierce dispute over newly discovered Platinum deposits in Galileo. The dispute arose when freelance prospector "Taro Yamada" sold 'exclusive' exploitation rights to his discoveries to the three corporations.
Disagreements over how this impasse should be resolved resulted in lawsuits being filed with regional courts on both Manhattan and New Tokyo. Each court had claimed jurisdiction over the matter, with separate injunctions being issued to ban the groups from extracting resources until the cases were resolved. Initially the two cases were heard in parallel, with the House courts relying on the provisions of the Sirius Commerce Act that established protocols on the enforcement of cross-border law and disputes.
Despite this, the injunctions are believed to have been widely flaunted by all involved, with frequent clashes occurring between Galileo's corporate mining teams. Liberty has previously accused Kusari of undermining the legitimacy of the courts by establishing a metals refinery aboard Fuchu Prison, which it says is intended to facilitate Platinum theft by Kishiro and Samura. Kusari in turn has pointed to DSE's Hinsdale Refinery in Colorado, although DSE representatives deny that Platinum was processed prior to the resolution of legal proceedings.
In a significant move, Liberty's Supreme Court has today issued a unilateral ruling on the dispute's final appeal. In a shocking turn, the justices determined that the initial sale of prospecting rights by "Taro Yamada" was illegitimate and set aside the claims flowing from it. This, it said, was based on confidential LSF testimony and evidence that Yamada was a pseudonym likely used by Lane Hackers or Kusari dissidents, acting to cause maximum disruption, inconvenience and embarrassment to corporate interests.
Instead, the court established that DSE had been the first group to attend and inspect the Platinum stake in the Raiden Cloud, and therefore exercised the strongest claim to exploitation rights. As a result, Kishiro and Samura have been ordered to immediately cease all activities in the Cloud, and pay compensation to DSE for their legal costs, and the value of any unlawfully extracted material.
Kusari's courts have objected to the ruling, calling the decision "an unprecedented breach of protocol". They have argued that Liberty's Supreme Court failed consult or notify them according to its duties under the SCA, and had drawn "perversely illogical conclusions using motivated reasoning". The Kusari Empire has refused to recognise the legitimacy of the ruling, and called for its own courts to immediately issue their own expedited verdict. Kishiro and Samura similarly have declared that Liberty's ruling was "deficient", and that they will wait for the New Tokyo circuit's verdict.
DSE has confirmed that it will take "all measures necessary" to defend its assets and property in Galileo, in line with Liberty law. Liberty Navy officials noted that they were aware of the court ruling, and the necessity to defend the property rights of Liberty citizens. The KNF have fired back with a statement advising that any attempt by the Liberty Navy to detain or otherwise impede the legitimate economic pursuits of Kusari citizens in the Independent Worlds will be interpreted as an act of aggression.
This legal drama has escalated already heightened tensions, following an unspecified "security incident" in the Independent Worlds, a foiled Farmers Alliance bomb attack on Deshima Station, and stop-and-search traffic checkpoints being established in both Colorado and Shikoku. As neutral parties urgently call for calm, Galileo appears to be on the brink.

This is all on Liberty. Since the internal turmoils surrounding the LNS-Harmony, they've fallen from grace. Internally corrupted more than ever, subverted by an external threat. They do their bidding and they'll rush Sirius into another war. Watch out on whose side you are here, the whole Platinum stuff is just a convenient excuse. Be prepared, everyone, for what is to come. May Orillion's wisdom save us.

We anticipate a fair and equitable court resolution on the side of the Empire of Kusari on this matter, and a diplomatic solution between the nations to be reached. The integrity of the Liberty Supreme court is certainly called into question by this inexplicable ruling.

"Confidential LSF testimony and evidence," huh? A unique way to say: "We made it up, but it's really true. Trust!" I know platinum is valuable, but damn Liberty. At least try to hide the greed.

Oh Gods, this whole situation smells of another war! I thought DSE was more interested in Copper? Why are militaries getting involved in what should remain a miner vs miner conflict? And where was the mention of Bristol? They even have a modular base out in Galileo!
Can we not all come together and talk things out without the need for violence? The Gaelic Wyvern Inn is willing to offer a neutral space and complimentary catering for peace treaty talks, if it means keeping folks from killing each other.
