You don't have to name specifics. I'm just curious what the reasons are throughout the community.

1. If I buy a new ship and I don't like the old ship name/have been asked to rename/have a set purpose in mind for the new ship.
2. If a ship's roleplay purpose deems a name change.

Every time I make a ship, because I name my /restart ships dumb, embarrassing things people will report me for if I fly them around for too long.

1. If it's a newer ship I haven't gotten into any interactions with, sort of often. I usually have a broad plan or an idea in mind and it either finds traction or doesn't. If it's the latter I rename after switching up ship type/location for a new idea. If I end up enjoying the character I'm playing, it tends to stick around.
2. I name it something, and then say "wait, I hate this actually", and then name it again, and say "wait, I hate this actually", and then name it again...

I usually name my starter ships after their pilots, then I rename them into a proper ship name once I upgrade them to transport or gunboat

I have placeholder types of names, and when I find a suitable name, I rename, then I don't rename it unless in the rare occasion I move my ship(s) to another faction, and even then I keep their original names. I like "christening" ships and keeping their original names. Same for purchased ships, unless I don't like the name of course.

Players used to consistently rename their ships to get around RP consequences (e.g. smuggler ship caught by lawfuls, rather than face the loss of docking privileges and/or breathtaking fine, simply rename) or to put one over on playerlist watchers (people actually pirating for financial gain renaming every time they got a bite). The community shrank, so now it's a case where in most circumstances, one can easily identify the player pirating them, instead of just them being a ship on the playerlist. If player [X] is active at [Y] time, and they're in [Z] system, chances are they're laying in wait to pirate anyone passing through there.
