rp question regarding ID, IFF, tag, name and scanner - ArthurDent - 05-30-2009

I have a question regarding the name, the player faction tag and the affiliation.

I have seen topics on the forum, where players complain about opponents referring to their player faction tag or affiliation. I am a little bit confused now. What exactly is considered out of roleplay? I know that I usually have to look for the ship-ID, to identify a vessel.

Let`s say I am still 9k away from the target "Junker - .:j:.Name.Here". What part of this information is transferred to my ship?

- May I say, "greetings Congressman Name.Here"?
- Or do I have to ignore his player faction tag and say "greetings Junker Name. Here"?
- Or do I simply say, "greetings Name. Here" because mentioning his IFF or player faction tag would be out of roleplay?

Personally, I treat IFF and name as inrp knowledge. I mean IFF stands for Identify Friend or Foe. It's there expressly to make itself known.

I treat the ship's name as part of the transponder information too. Pretty sure modern planes squawk out a name. Of course this is based entirely from segments in films I have watched where the man in the radiotower is telling the girl how to land the plane because all the pilots are dead.

IDs are kind of a grey area so I mostly go off the tags.

Wow, that was really quick, thanks.

I'm inclined to agree with Ben there. I've always took the IFF as something the ship is broadcasting, which is why on occasion it malfunctions and shows the wrong thing (ie, they're repfixing, etc).

Name seems like something that's also broadcast. All ships seem to use the same style navigation system, so it may be a part of that. Or related to the autopilot; Ships broadcast name and location for a certain range so that other navigational systems can make sure to not crash into them (in theory).

Considering that autopilot also avoids (or tries to) all stationary objects, including nonfunctional ships and station wreaks, I'd say that has little to do with it.

Basically, I take the IFF and name as in-RP information.
I use the word "transponder" to describe my IFF, as it's basically around the same thing.

It's broadcasting a signal to pilots in the area, telling them what the ship is affiliated with and what the pilot's/ship's name is. If this wasn't accessible to everyone, we'd have some messes during battles, I think.

So, tags are in-RP, obviously.

I, however, believe that IDs are completely OORP.

I have a simple explanation for this.

Take the intelligence services (M-15, LSF, the Rheinland one[unspellable as usual] and the Kusari one) as examples. Should it be so easy to find them out if they're squawking something else?

I think not.

That's like looking in a plainclothes policeman's wallet for his badge.
Exactly like it.

Their IFF should tell you all you need to know.

In real life, a mismatch IFF can cause your aircraft to get shot down. So, IFF is a universal thingy to show who you are, also gives you the option of doing RP over its wrong transmission.

That helped me a lot, thank you all.

The ID is really a grey area? That is strange, cause I have to check it before I attack someone.

I suppose the "long range scanner" is not out of roleplay too, right? I know the location of every ship in sirius (exept special systems). I can identify ships that are in my system on the long range scanner, as soon as they enter the system. I can send a message to every ship I see on my long range scanner (exept ships in special systems) without beeing out of character.

Referring to a players level would probably be out of character, correct?

This is very OORP. As it makes no sense. If this was true there could never have been a surprise attack in F history, which there has been. If the faction you are playing has enough infrastructure to have sensor satellites then you can RP having some greater knowledge of ships in the system or in any system controlled by that faction, or in some cases, its allies. Be careful though because once a royal said he detected my council ship and was threatening me and what not and i was docked on a base, so of course i said "Funny, I didnt think royal satellites could detect me inside a base..."

IFF: This is your faction.

Tag: This is the secondary organization of that faction you belong to.

ID: These are the rules you play by, not your associated faction.
