What can we do with the sourcecode? - silverleaf - 06-12-2009 Just wondering... with all the talk about pressurizing microsoft to release the source code, what exactly can you do with it? I assume A GREAT MANY THINGS, but can you name a few examples that arn't here already? Also, how about better voiceacting? Can it be put in without the source code? I mean... I hate it when the station says 'this is B-L-A-N-K, you are cleared to dock'. However, I seldom play with voice on these days anyway... What can we do with the sourcecode? - Linkus - 06-12-2009 Voice acting is simple audio files. You could have it play the barney tune if you want. I think that would be a bit too sadistic though, hearing 'I love you, you love me..' as a minirazor flies into your face. Issue is getting people here to do high quality ones. Essentially you get a mic and record yourself saying something. After a bit of file conversion, it can be flung in game and used for anything. No one never asked though, except that I am working on music stuff for disco nowadays, I can do some voice acting with some other people. I am a singer btw, I can do stuff for it. I believe, so it wouldn't be difficult to port that over to directx 9 and use the programmable pipeline to improve the shininess. It just basically means were not stuck modding .ini files we can do anything. But I suspect one of the first things done would be a change to she server side code to multithread it and improve efficiency with more cores and more memory allowing us to raise the 200 limit. What can we do with the sourcecode? - reavengitair - 06-12-2009 Ok. Seeing as most of you are more than double my age, and double my computing experience... WTF IS A SOURCE CODE? What can we do with the sourcecode? - Recoil9000 - 06-12-2009 source code is the code for the entire project. ATM, the modders only have the code to adjust certain aspects of the game. With the source code they could change the game entirely if they wanted to. What can we do with the sourcecode? - Darkard - 06-12-2009 With the source they could have Multi-player crewed cap ships. One to fly, One to use the Anti-Fighter Turrets, one for the Main Guns. Epic With the source we could have Planet surface battle. Or actully walking around in stations yourself. Maybe even with other players walking around as well. *Edit* ...Maybe What can we do with the sourcecode? - silverleaf - 06-12-2009 So... any eta on when that stoopid microsoft will FINALLY give the modders da code? Has anyone actually formally asked within the last 6 months? What can we do with the sourcecode? - ZTeeVeR - 06-12-2009 Not to mentioned that with the source code, you could potentially have FL server benefit from a dual or quad core setup, wilst it only supports a single core at this stage. Anyway, i do not think that Microsoft will be giving away it source code. I think that you best shot would be to try and request is ttough a nice Discovery delegation. Has anyone actually formally asked within the last 6 months? Never? Really, relatively few companies are willing to release the coding for their projects. And I believe that even with the source code, there is still only so much you can do without a large task force, budget, lots of time and good coding knowledge. So you could walk around planets and bases, but I imagine it would be a pain in the ass and buggy as hell. |
