for what you need guns on 5k cargo ships? even the container transport with 12 guns can not defend against pirate in bomber.
(good old 4,83 and my CT gb killer:))
and less guns mean, that you need better escort. (yes, i know again the words: need escort)

con trans can take on a GB. can sometimes take on a Bomber as well depends what turrets its got on it.
I would go with the conn trans because of that.

I agree with weedalot, also, if you are doing corporation trading (ie, not trading by yourself), take a leaf from the Bowex convoy book!
